Re: PDA's and programs

its nice to have a PDA its really useful and handy. its practically good for nurses who are on the go and studying at the same time. an all in one thing that you could put your drug handbook, nursing diagnosis, calculator, etc. in one small handy gadget!

Re: PDA's and programs

Hi All,

i was wondering if anyone has any insight on iPhone texhnology for use as PDA (especially for nursing). I will start school shortly and Im going to buy a new PDA phone. I thought about the Blackjack II, Blackberry and some told me the iPhone is great for that now (i havent been to impressed with its other features) Can anyone point me in the right direction when it comes to PDA phone use and its possible role in the student and professional nurse's life? Thanks!

Re: PDA's and programs

Wow, this thread is too long to read everyone's, but I too am looking for a PDA phone for nursing and was wondering which one I should go with. I currently have a Palm LifeDrive which I love for accessing information, but hate how bulky it is. I would like to just have it all on a small compact phone. Not interested in the Iphone, but was curious about the LG Dare. Any advice?

Yes, the iPhone and iPod touch released the SDK. You will need to have a current OS of iTunes and will need to download an update to your device. However, the medical apps are still very limited. Epocrates is available and a few charting and A&P apps are out. I have yet to see any apps that compare to the Windows Mobile/PALM OS apps. (calculators, guide books, critical care and emergency programs, etc.)

I am talking about non web based apps.

Re: PDA's and programs

Ok, so I just ordered the Palm t/x. Looked at several places most wanted $289-314, and then 50-70 for 2 yr warranty. I found for $253 and a 2 yr warranty for $20. New not refurbished. Will update when I receive and check it out.

Anyone else have the t/x and like it?

I have a Palm T/X. I like it. At the beginning it was hard to connect to the internetwith WiFi, and it seemed a little buggy, but once I hot synced it a couple times, it's pretty awesome after that.

Hi, I was just wondering if you bought the iPhone? If so, have you found any downloads for it? I bought one way before I got accepted into nursing school, anyways, I'm trying to avoid buying a pda.

the Nursing Constellation Plus on skyscape.com looks like a great package and just wondered if anyone ordered this set or how they feel about it?

any great programs specificially for geriatrics that I should check out?

if I decide to buy programs separately is it best to order the CD or the download when that option is presented? I was leaning more toward the CD because while I "want it NOW" I want that back-up in case of computer failure, etc.

i'm using Vista and I saw on Palm support that there are downloads that enable compatability...anyone have an opinion on this? I do have an older laptop with XP and wonder if it would be easier to use that exclusively from the get go to avoid frustration or if the downloads really do allow for seamless integration?

Thanks again for all of the input...makes me wish I had bought one before clinicals (instead of lugging all of the books around)...but better late than never!
the constellation for skyscape is great. keep in mind there may be some free programs regarding the calculators and such outside of skyscape, epocrates is one. Also, there are some pretty distinct differences in pricing for the drug guides available, all of which are "pretty much the same" in terms of content. Some have updates good for a year to keep your info "up to date". You could well save more money shopping them out individually, and getting free calculators elsewhere. But, the choice is yours. My GF actually went back to XP just to use her palm. not trying to scare you off, but we had very poor results trying to hook up. And we are pretty savvy.

You will love your palm for clinicals, but it sure was sweet to have one little tiny book as opposed to "bringin' the thunder" with my drug/medsurg/backbreakers I left at home during lecture/labs!!

I saw that price on newegg.com for the "international" version, that is exactly the same, but with a "first time you start it" language selector. No difference at all, and cheaper by about $50. Also, the charger was an autovolt 110-220 which is nice for traveling. (various models may have different configurations, but my particular US model came with a 110 only charger, while my GFs international had 110-220v.)

I love it.

It is a little buggy, but a soft restart usually gets you back in the game. Free wifi in places and some airports is nice. The big screen still beats any phone and is great for movies (beats the poop out of a first gen ipod video and is 5 years older). The sound is a bit cheezy, so it really isn't much of an MP3 player, but it works in a pinch.
