Re: PDA's and programs

I've been using a PDA/Pocket PC for years now. I started with a bones basic Palm pilot but graduated to a Dell Axim 50 2 years ago. This is what I call my brain (Literally!) My phone book with numbers to all the high end referral hospitals/my drug reference guide (Epocrates Pro)(Talk to your drug reps-one of ours gave me a certificate for a full years subscription!) and finally PEPID- the Emergency Nurses reference manual. Both Pepid and Epocrates offer a 90 day free trial. Pepid now has Oncology,Med Surg, and Critical Care Versions. I routinely precep new EMS/Nursing students and get them on the bandwagon. I've even gone as far as recomending to hospital administration that a PDA would be a perfect hospital gift/tool.

I second that motion I have been using it since the beginning of nursing school and am very impressed. There are numerous different suites such as Student, ER and so on. I recommend this program to everybody that wants a good nursing program, and they offer a free 2 week trial of it.

Re: PDA's and programs

Is there any advantage to you as a nurse using a Palm vs. a Pocket PC (technical issues aside...)

Re: PDA's and programs

I finally joined the pda world this christmas! I got a Palm Tungsten TX, but am still trying to decide which software bundle to go with (or if I should just pick and choose programs). Epocrates, Pepid, Unbound or Skyscape.... I think I may have to make a spreadsheet to make sense of it all. The TX does have wireless, but I want a program that is on the hard drive/memory card so I don't have to worry about having wireless access.
(I am a nursing student, 1 1/2 years left, who uses mac at home.)

One question... I noticed some of the programs require a yearly subscription. At the end of the period of time you paid for do they quit working? Do they no longer update? Do you no longer have online access?

Thanks!

Re: PDA's and programs

I purchased Skyscapes RN Constellation and then added a few other software items. Basically, I use the Tabers Dictionary, Drug Guide, and Labs the most. Occaisionally I'll use the other programs which can be a good reference to Nursing diagnosis or skills procedures...
I also like my PDA to keep all my addresses, phone numbers and schedule on. I do regret purchasing my software online...because when trouble arises (as it always will), I had to fight tooth and nail to get another software download onto my home computer. Having a hard copy backup would have been nice.....and I should figure out how to make my own hard copy backup. Anyway, I put all that software onto a memory chip instead of my PDA's memory. I'm "hoping" that should anything happen to my PDA, all I would have to do is remove the chip and use it in another new PDA verses having my software locked and buried in a non functioning PDA.
Cheers and happy studying! Your PDA will come in handy ....all that info at your fingertips and fits in your pocket nicely to boot!

Re: PDA's and programs

I start nursing school next week. I bought a PDA not only for nursing school, but also to keep me organized. I saw it as a way to reduce the need for a typical day organizer which can be bulky. I also found that when I did use a regular day organizer I had a tendency to stuff papers in it which caused major clutter and less organization.
I saw that there is a program which includes Davis drug guide and another nursing program for 89.95. I didnt think that was such a bad deal.

Thanks!

Re: PDA's and programs

I just bought a Palm T/X and I am thinking of of getting this deal from mosby's
http://www.us.elsevierhealth.com/pro...=9780323054621
It has their drug guide, lab&diagnostic, and nursing PDQ all on a 1G memory card. Has anyone used this?
THanks

Skyscape does offer some of them for the iPhone, but you have to have Internet access to actually run the programs. At the moment Apple has decided on a closed system so 3rd parties cannot really install anything on the iPhone/iTouch.
