Re: PDA's and programs, could we make this a sticky?

Hello everybody! I'm a SN at university of central florida and I can tell you that equipped right, a PDA is a lifesaver. I've been reading over a lot of the posts and it seems like theyre as much of a help once youre out in the professional world as well, which is good to know.

I bought a Palm Lifedrive on ebay for 200 dollars (they retail for 400). It has 4GB of memory built in and you can add to that with flash cards. The thing is magnificent. I've had older PDAs before and they were slow and clunky, this thing is lightning fast.
The programs I use for school/clinical:
Nurses Pocket Guide 10th Ed.
RNotes Pocket Guide (redundant i know, but sometimes I consult both for better grip)
Saunders NCLEX Pocket Review (for my free time)
Lippincotts Drug Guide/Interactions/Consultation Guide Multipack
Archimedes Free Medical Calculator
Tabers Cyclopedic Medical Dictionary

I bought all of those programs from Skyscape and they have saved my backside more times than i can count (class+clinical+full time job=no sleep). Even with all of those programs, I've got room for hundreds of mp3s and class notes. It also has both bluetooth and WiFi, so you can get online for whatever reason just about anywhere. Also, for students, palm makes a bluetooth folding keyboard for the lifedrive and tungsten e2 that collapses to about the size of the PDA itself, which is fantastic for taking notes in class, and its very very quiet.
Overall, it has great battery life (i just plop it on the charger with my cell phone every night) and is amazingly versatile. The cover has a tendency to get scratches and dings easily, but thats just cosmetic and there are about a million different kinds of cases/covers for them.
Like i said, mine retails for 400, but I got one off ebay for half that, and that seems to be the price trend on ebay from my browsing. Hope this helps!

Re: PDA's and programs, could we make this a sticky?

I have a Sony Clie SJ-22. Just ordered a new charger/USB link. Its a couple years old, doesn't play MP3's but does take a memory stick. I'll keep you posted on whether an older model without all the bells and whistles can handle the programs we will be using. ALSO, our instructor told us we can download stuff from the hospitals computers during clinicals, so some will be free, especially the drug references.

I am a Macintosh user (we are few and far between). For the most part computer software integrates well between Mac and Win (nowdays) but as far as a handheld PDA, I found that PALM OS is the MOST COMPATIBLE with my computer.

Don't know if this will help anyone out there. I hope so.

I bought the Davis Drug Guide, Taber's Med Dictionary, Labs & Diagnostic Test, and Dx and D/O in a bundle from www.fadavis.com

I got my PDA on sale with a rebate- PalmOS tungsten T5 for $349 plus a $25 rebate from www.skyscape.com

I got tons and tons of free software by just doing a google search for free PDA software

www.lww.com also has PDA software for nursing you can buy

The NCLEX Review 8th ed is awesome!!! you can study anywhere, forget having to lug around books, plus I have word so I downloaded all my notes, and I have tunes and games to give my brain a break! I love my PDA

I am a Mac user as well. Thanks for the info. Im looking into purchasing 2 PDAs one for myself and the other for my boyfriend who is a PC user. It stinks having different operating systems since we both will be in nursing. Finding a PDA that will work well with Mac and PC is very important too me so we can share info and sync with our laptops. If you know of anyother PDAs that work well with MAC , or anyother programs, please pass on the info. The Mac world is lonely and confusing at times but I still stay true to my G4 and im tempted to purchase the new iPhone.....hmmmm.

Re: PDA's and programs, could we make this a sticky?

I just starting nursing school and I use my cingular 8525 pocket pc phone with a 2gb memory card to run all of my skyscape software. It works great and it's a phone, 2mp camera, and pda device all in one. I just bought a bluetooth gps receiver and now I use it for my navigation device as well. No need to lug around different types of electronic devices.

Good question. I too was wondering why a good device like Palm LifeDrive would no longer exist. Here is what I found: http://www.mobiletechreview.com/palmone-LifeDrive.htm
Discontinued Jan. 2007 because it doesn't meet the 2007 European Union lead-free requirements.

Re: PDA's and programs, could we make this a sticky?

Just wanted to link to a site I found, it has AP software on it that looks helpful. I'm thinking about purchasing it instead of the videos they have at my school's bookstores, as I could carry it with me to class.

http://www.pocketgear.com/software_detail.asp?id=22408

If anyone else tries this out, please let me know how good it is. The price seems reasonable, but not sure if I will use it or not. I just ordered an HP iPaq, so I will wait and see how fast I get used to using it before I start buying extra software, but I did remember seeing someone ask about AP software for the handheld. (hope it helps!)
