I AM CURRENTLY WORKING ON MY BSN AND ONE OF MY PROJECTS FOR MY NURSING INFORMATICS CLASS IS ON CPOE (COMPUTER PHYSICIAN ORDER ENTRY) PDA'S. AS NURSES WE KNOW THAT YOU CAN REALLY STRUGGLE READING OUR DR.S ORDERS. WITH MANY MEDICATION ERRORS THAT WE HERE ABOUT ON THE NEWS I THOUGHT THIS PROJECT MIGHT BE VERY INTERESTING. I AM WORKING WITH 3 OTHER CLASSMATES ON THIS PROJECT AND IM LOOKING FOR SOMEONE WHO ALREADY WORKS IN A HOSPITAL WHO HAS THIS IMPLEMENTED. DO YOU LIKE IT? DOES IT MAKE YOUR JOB EASIER? WHAT ARE YOUR PHYSICIANS THOUGHTS ON THIS NEW TECHNOLOGY? HAVE YOU SEEN DECREASED MEDICATION ERRORS IN.? ANY INPUT WILL BE GREATLY APPRECIATED. ALSO IF YOU KNOW WHAT IT COSTS YOUR HOSPITAL FOR GETTING THIS UP AND RUNNING?
THANKS

Re: Any One Use Cpoe In The Hospitals

Greetings UR10CMPUSH,

I have used CPOE - Computerized Provider Order Entry as a clinician in both the home health and acute care settings. I have also been responsible for implementing CPOE in multiple hospitals. Attached are a few documents that should help and a link.
http://www.cpoe.org/
Related to CPOE utilized on a PDA the issue I have encountered has been a matter of realestate/ screen size. PDAs and the applications that run on them have less realestate to enter and view data on. A particular vendor's product may not run in the PDA enviroment but is compatible displaying on the screen of a laptop or standard sized monitor. User complaints that I have received in the past are that the screen is too small and or that they are not comfortable with the data entry methods (thumb type typing similiar to what is used to text message or the use of a stylet) utilized with PDAs. We recently rolled out CPOE in the ED and users chose not PDAs but a mix of tablets, swing arm monitors and stationary monitors.
Good Luck

This was so helpful. I can't wait to share these with my classmates. My nursing informatics class is very interesting. Joining this Listserv was part of my project. I was worried that no one would apply to my post. Im glad that you did, because you supplied me with some valuable information for my paper. thanks again
