Hi I've been an LPN for just over a year and glad to say today i finished the last nursing concept test from Excelsior! now its to wait for that horrifying CPNE! anyway I work at Jackson Memorial Hospital in Miami on a great med-surg floor and the experience there has helped me fly through these tests.

Re: Roll Call, LPN to RN Students!!!

hello everybody, i have been an LPN for 10 yrs and now working on completing my RN. I've been in LTC most of my nursing career. I'm very interested in wound care so when I complete my schooling (would like an advanced degree) I will see what's out there.

Re: Roll Call, LPN to RN Students!!!

Well, I'm 56, have been an LVN since 1973. My first five years were spent working in ICU, acute med surg, rehab, burn unit.....I got a lot of experience as a new grad. I loved it. We moved out of the area and I had to apply at the local hospital to avoid the hour commute. I got a job in maternity where I've been for the past 29 years. I'm not up on what goes on with the med surg patient anymore, really. But I know things will come back to me. I've been enrolled at Excelsior for 5 years now and have not completed one thing! I have some study material from Rue but a lot of it outdated and I would have had to buy the current guides to guarantee I was studying the right things for the tests.
Nursing is and always has been my passion....self discipline has not. As much as I want to have that RN and earn more money for my retirement years, it's hard to focus on getting done. I feel that I should be looking forward to retirement years without having to do all this. BUT I am not what I want to be...this has been a dream and I only keep dreaming. I know I have to start each day, eat breakfast and then take myself to the library and just make the studying my priority. I'm at a point where I could do this but the motivation is not there. I am so ready to study...I have the books needed for nursing concepts 1....what is wrong with me?? Work will even pay me back about $2200.00 a year. Forgive me for not being better at focusing.
I suggest those of you who are following in these footsteps find another way...maybe community college where you can pace yourself and get done. Time passes no matter if you are studying or not. I've seen other LVN's do this...now one of them is a charge nurse. I have to say she is NOT a good nurse. This upsets me all the more because I'm a very good nurse, get a lot of patient recognition and hospital recognition. I really wish I could get that RN but I'm still just wishing. I have only 2 years to complete Excelsior....and the clock is ticking. Sigh. A community program would take years to get into....
Best wishes to all.......if at first you don't succeed....pick up the pace and start right in as soon as you can. I don't know how I got to be 56 so darn soon!
Any encouragement is appreciated......
Hugs from this CaliforniaLVN (Rosie)

Are you still living in Ca ? From what I understand Ca no longer accepts Excelsior degrees.

Re: Roll Call, LPN to RN Students!!!

Hi, It took me two babies and 400mile move and too many comments,"Oh, I thought you were an RN..." to motivate me to a $10.00 raise. I've told 5 LPN's about this program that actually did it, 4/5 are RN's now. If you are a great nurse now, you won't change /x for your pay...(shouldn't you be paid for what you are worth?) Good luck to you, I know you will make the best decision for your self, j

Re: Roll Call, LPN to RN Students!!!

californiaLVN;It's like you said, shouldn't I be starting to settle, relax, then retire?Instead of doing all this rn studying. do you feel it's unfair to have to work so hard, so long spend so much to be an Rn when in some ways you feel ,as a good LVN you shouldnjust have to take a few tests, maybe get grandfathered in? I could be you talking. I'm 58, & started classes. Now they want me to basically start all ove,cuz I've been in ltc too long(away from hosp skills & knowledge , yet 1/2 the time I'm advising RN's on how to do such & such , how to talk to dr's, what to tell them what you want, plus monitoring cnas etc. Also are you thinking will I ever recoup the money i've spent on all this education? will I throw out my back, or have a heart attack next month? Am I close/sue

Re: Roll Call, LPN to RN Students!!!

Calif. LVN, keep trying, find a time of day or night to study, even if it's only an hour or two a day or night. make an assessment of how you spend your time, you may be able to free up some of it. We are like a good bottle of wine, we get better with time, and you should be rewarded for it. stay strong!
