Lightbulb Search Results

I have a hard time finding exactly what I'm looking for, without having to click through every single page of a thread.

It is nice that the search title is highlighted in red, but clicking through sometimes 10+ pages and scrolling down each, to find what I'm looking for, to me, is tedious.

Suggestion: an "exact search", or "search for all, or any of these words"

For example, I did a search for my "Lane Community College": the search result "Does this bother you", has 91 replies. Each page of the thread has "college" highlighted and when I finally get to page 7, I found "community college" and then at the bottom of that page "Lane". I never even found what I was looking for in this thread.

The next thread I looked through was "Failed my 1st math proficiency test", which has 28 replies on 3 pages. I found "Lane Community College" at the bottom of page 3.

It would be nice to have a quicker target/shortcut that will take me to the exact point in the thread where I would find the results.

Thanks for listening

Re: Search Results

Below your search terms, you might try switching the 'show results as threads' to 'show results as posts.' When I did that, it narrowed down the hits and I could click on the individual post, rather than wading through the whole thread.

Another suggestion is to search only the state forum, if applicable. A Google search tells me that Lane CC is in Oregon and you would expect most of the relevant discussions to occur in the Oregon Forum. Specifying the Oregon Forum, your search terms only turn up one hit. (Unfortunately, I don't think it's one that is going to tell you much about the school.)

If you would like to start a discussion about Lane CC, I think your best bet at this point would be to create a new thread in the Oregon Forum.

Thanks, the 'show results as posts" helped.

Any time you want to search for an exact phrase AS YOU TYPE IT - put it in quotes:::

"Roy Fokker is a loveable joker"
Now the results will ONLY display as those specific posts there the phrase is mentioned exactly like so.

If you had searched only as Roy Fokker is a loveable joker

The search results would have resulted in hundreds more instances where each of those words appeared individualy or in different orders.

I realise that you were looking for a way to display only the posts - but doing a seach this way makes it very specific and should help eliminate other results

cheers,

PS: This trick applies to ANY search engine - Google, Yahoo!, MSN etc.

<snip>
I'm having the same problem doing "exact match" searches on this board. I tried searching for "Roy Fokker is a loveable joker" on this board (with quotes, as suggested above), and got 400-500 pages of hits, whether I wanted hits displayed as posts or threads.

For example, if I want to see posts containing the phrase "University of Cincinnati", is that possible on this board? If I enter the search phrase shown above, I get zillions of hits on posts containing "University" or "Cincinnati", NOT just posts containing the full phrase. This makes the search option a lot less useful.

Thanks for any help on this!

Re: Search Results

When I do as Roy suggested for University of Cincinnati, I'm only getting 62 hits and it's only bringing up posts containing the entire phrase. Searching the specific state forum or searching only titles will narrow it down to only a handful of hits.

OK, I must be dense or something. I can't duplicate your search results.

If I:
go to http://allnurses.com/forums/
click "search"
type “University of Cincinnati” in text window, select “show threads”, click “go”, results in 373 hits.

By the 24th hit (Cna Stna), it’s pulling up garbage, highlighting individual words like “of”, “Cincinnati”, nowhere in the post is the word University or the search phrase.

If I do the same thing, except with the "show posts" option clicked, it results in 493 hits. By the 8th hit (CNA Classes in Cincy???), it’s pulling up garbage.

What am I doing wrong?

Thanks!
