Closing Threads by the MODS

I posted a topic about why nurses take the abuse they do and even though I may have used words that some found offensive, it brought up points of views from many nurses. At no time was there any name calling. One of the mods decided she didn't like the topic and removed it. Why don't you just post the johnson and johnson nurse commercial on here and run it over and over and over again. Then the nurses here can feel all warm and fuzzy inside about their jobs. Not everyone does and you, the mod need to respect all points of view. The thread was doing fine. I know it is difficult to sit and think that there may be downfalls to this profession. I think new people that come on here should know all the good and all the bad. Let them take with them, what they feel is useful and what is not. Let the people speak and if you, the mod don't like it, edit it and let it go through.

Re: Closing Threads by the MODS

I am so sick of the MODS closing some of the threads that I posted that I am not going to renew my subscription when it comes due. Especially when they had to do with questions about the nursing field.

Re: Closing Threads by the MODS

I can understand your frustration, but there are times that the threads need to be closed down. It more than likely had to do with the fact that the thread is causing more aminosity than it is worth. How you are anyone else feels about nursing is just an "opinion" thats it and nothing else. There are many nurses out there who are satisfied with their career choice, just as there are those who are not. Nursing is not an easy job, you either decide to deal with all its problems or you dont. I am sure the mods shut it down for a few reasons. You may not like it but the message was loud and clear!

You're right, not everyone feels warm and fuzzy about their jobs, but ya know what? Not everyone feels the way you do, either. I only read a few of the posts on your original thread and stopped because there was SO much negativity in the post. You do not speak for me, yet you had the gumption to include all of us in the "we". YOU may be unhappy with the nursing profession but I am not.

As for the mods closing the thread, they in their roles as Big Brother have the right to close and review any threads that may cause a problem. They may reopen it, they may not, but lemme tell ya: I may not agree with the mods, but I would rather there be mods to close a questionable thread than there to be no one. I've been on an unmoderated board and I don't go there anymore because things got out of hand. When threads are closed for review it is not a unilateral decision.....they discuss it and decide as a panel whether or not to reopen it.

I think the mods rock.

Re: Closing Threads by the MODS

I actually appreciate what the mods do...thank you for keeping this site readable! There is so much negativity in the ED I certainly don't want to see it all over the place here. And name calling etc etc...pa leese

Only problem I have had was in the chatroom I got asked to watch my language in the middle of a conversation after I was very upset over something at work and said "damn"....grrr that really irked me because this "mod" only heard the very last part and jumped down my throat, so I just don't go to the chatroom hardly ever now.

Re: Closing Threads by the MODS

Lorster, the thread wasn't shut down becasuse it presented a negative side to nursing. Look at the many threads nurses who "vent" post here. You'll realize we just don't present the sunny side to nursing.

Sometimes we spend a lot of time and energy and on threads and what you see is only a small reflection of the time we spend. It's not always a labor of love and sometimes threads just need a cooling down period so we mods can take a breath, heads can cool, and people can perhaps read the whole thread without initially reacting from the hip.

IWANT2BEERN, I'm sorry you feel that way. I know how you feel. I used to post to threads and wonder "what did I waste my time for if it is only going to be shut down". But there are literally thoundsands and thousands of threads and the ones that get closed down are few and far between, although it doesn't seem that way to you. Brian and the moderators are very aware of complaints when threads are closed down. We realize we can't please 100% of the people 100% of the time. Believe or not our goal is to keep as many threads open as possible. Also, note that when it's closed for a cooling off period, doesn't mean it's closed forever.

Tazzi, I hit the edit button when I meant to hit the quote button, so ignore that I edited your post - I did not.

Thanks so much for your support.

You highlight one problem I was having with that thread (I wasn't the one who closed it.) People read the op's first couple of hot headed posts and responded negatively (obviously the op didn't have a problem with this), some of whom violated TOS with personal attacks But if you took the time to read further the op clarified a bit further, and responded several more times and perhaps people wouldn't have been so negative. Many of the responses people had to the OP were not necessarily valid given the context of the entire thread. Although there were some generalizations made about nursing based on personal experiences, that obviously isn't true for all of us.

I'm guilty too however, of not reading entire threads when they get that long.

Re: Closing Threads by the MODS

Sometimes I think the Moderators really have no reason to close some of the threads or posts. I experienced that before...I wrote down "Seniority=Senility," however, it was closed by SmilingBlueEyes. If somehow SmilingBlueEyes knows what I was talking about...it was only a sense of humor rather than a sense of insult. Where is my Constitutional Rights?

Re: Closing Threads by the MODS

I don't think it's fair to say people responded without reading the entire thread...I read it all, and disagreed with 100% of what the OP had to say. Sometimes assertiveness can be read as negativity on a BB, though.

It makes little sense to me to have a thread going about how nurses don't take up for themselves, and then when you have a few that do, they get called mean, nonsupportive, or negative. And it wasn't the OP doing it. I know I feel it's unhealthy to support a view that is unproductive. And you know where I learned that? Allnurses, basically.

We have all seen the dynamic shown in the thread at one time or another in the workplace, haven't we? Maybe if we look at the big picture, it was indicative of one of the problems in nursing. Sometimes it can start with someone who has a genuine complaint, wants to reflect on it, and wants feedback. Then you have those who just like to complain that chime in. That turns into a gaggle of people standing around complaining, but not doing anything about the problem. The original complainer may feel somewhat validated, because she at least stops feeling like she is alone. Now you have a gaggle of people feeding off of each other's negativity, but still nothing gets done. Now add a couple people who ask, "Well, what are you going to do about it?" The gaggle is aghast at the "lack of support" that is being shown to them, the victims of all that is wrong in their institution. This can be what continues the cycle of horizontal violence we see in the workplace, can't it? I've seen it start with discontent toward the institution, and get redirected at those who didn't go along with the group- haven't we all?

Lorster, I hope the thread reopens, too. Now, it took gumption for you to start this thread in protest to something you found disagreeable. Imagine how much better things would be if you could do that at work, too.

Karen posted some very informative links at the end of the thread. Check them out- they're great resources.
