Re: Closing Threads by the MODS

I went through a phase where I stopped posting here - about six months - because the moderators were getting on my last nerve. I also moderate a board and we basically let just about everything slide. But I re-approached this site with a different attitude when I came back, and it's worked. I have to moderate myself and think before hitting "submit" because it IS highly structured. But I think it works, here. We have everyone from people thinking of starting the prerequisites for a nursing program to highly credentialed advanced practitioners. And greater care mjust be taken to avoid, well, ******* off half the board by speaking too plainly. My first impulse is often to say, "Oh, bite me," and here, I'm better off saying, "Well, that's an interesting perspective." And to myself, "Yeah, in another dimension."

It's nice to have you back. I seriously hate losing members due to moderator actions. Unfortunately the reality is that we do. I know how it feels to have a mod edit you or ask you to self-edit. You echo kind of like what I was saying above, there are all kinds of people with all kinds of sensibilities here. Some people like yourself and even me believe it not or are very tolerate of a lot of heat. I remember prior to being a mod having a long conversation about homosexuality in the Current Events forum, and the guy basically was a hateful bigot, many times moderators asked me if I wanted the thread shut down. It seems they were having a harder time with it than me, or more than likely they were getting a lot of complaints. I kept saying "no, I can handle it". Eventually the bigot got himself banned and the thread was closed.
Others report the mildest thing (in my eyes) as offensive and we need to respect them and kind of keep some sort of middle ground where the over-sensitive are felt welcome and the hot-headed ones don't get too hate and storm off, or get themselves banned.
Recently I removed to exact same type of posts from two members in the BSN vs. ADN forum. One said "sure, no problem, I understand completely". Another said "I demand my money back for my membership and trust me I will be telling everyone about the horrible treatment I received at this website" and she was gone forever.
Excellent advice for myself included to pause and think before shooting from the hip.

Hey I think that's a good approach and one I'm going to try because I definitely have a quick impulse as well. Add to that the fact that I come from AOL where the unmoderated anything goes type boards rule and I have to switch hats rather quickly.
Thanks for the tip!

I don't post here as often as i used to (to the sheer joy of at least two people on the board), mainly because my priorities are different now. But it all got started with the exact same reason that you'd stopped posting for 6 months.
I felt like a few had taken the privilege of moderating and ran with it, and i sensed a bit of superiority complex from one or two. I also felt as though some people's personality, once they became a moderator or administrator, was the opposite of when they were the average everyday member. Sometimes it felt more like talking to a robot than a person when talking to a mod or admin. Except for the time when i got emailed about one of my posts, and the person (a mod) that did it started in with how hard it is to moderate, you have no idea (which, actually, i do have idea about it, i used to do that at a CNA site), yet got angry at me when i said, exact quote "if you feel that it's that hard, you could probably give up the privilege."
With that said, does that mean that's how it all really is? No, not saying that, it's JMHP (the 'P' standing for perspective), whether it's right or wrong, who knows.
I've re-approached here, to a point. I still don't sugar-coat, what i type is what i said, i don't imply anything. But i do more reading than posting anymore, mainly because i don't spend the time that i used to when i first joined here. Life has changed for the better and fuller in 2 1/2 years, and it leaves little room for the internet for me.

If I had two wishes when it comes to moderators and what they do, they would be:
1. Threads attacking older/experienced nurses would be shut down immediately. Threads like that against new nurses aren't tolerated; I don't understand why the reverse is allowed. If it's "just venting," then shouldn't older/experienced nurses be allowed to vent about frustrations with new nurses?
2. Posts threads by people wanting to know if PT/ST/OT/RT, etc. is right for them, etc. just confuse me. Sometimes it feels like I'm reading "allalliedhealthprofessionals..com" If someone from another discipline wants to vent, shouldn't they vent in a forum that's appropriate to their profession? In particular I'm thinking of some posts from people who don't even work with human patients.
I do appreciate that the moderators have a hard job.
