Re: Closing Threads by the MODS

Actually bumping heads with the mods, if done in the right way, can be a good thing I suppose, both for us mods (keeps us on our toes, lets us know what you think) and for the member if they gain some understand and continue to stick it out as a member.
I used to think that.

I would like to thank the mods for allowing me to express my views on this subject.

BTW: would it be possible for the mods to give more explanation when they do shut down the threads? At the very least, maybe people would understand it better. Because, when there's no explanation and no apparent TOS violations, it just seems punitive.

I know when I have shut down a thread in the past I have always given a warning and I have always given an exlaination to why I was going to shut down the thread. I have also been in a situation where I have questioned why a thread has been closed when I felt it was closed down too soon so we as moderators can sometimes get frustrated too.

In my short experience they have been friendly and always willing to answer questions, including the "Why the &)(^%%! did you close my thread!" type. Just my experience, sorry if anyone else has had the opposite.
You are NOT alone - I'm right with you.

I've disagreed with a mod a time or two about a thread in a pm but that pales in comparison to all the positive experiences I've had here.

Everyone comes from a different perspective and so what reads like "milk toast" to some is exciting and interesting to others.

I love the Current Events Forum and anything to do with the nursing activism. Very interesting (to me) conversations are going on now about health care and the food stamp program. Both threads have some posts that could be considered insulting to some but the threads go on. What about the threads about unions? Those are lively fun. To me anyway.

I like saying hello in the Break Room - it has been very interesting to get to know some of the folks here.

And that makes it more meaningful when you hear about a new baby or a death in the family or a son who has brain cancer or someone's struggle to find a job or the end of a relationship. I don't find that boring. Or when someone posts a new song they heard. Or recommends a book.

There are also threads where nursing students and new nurses ask questions of us older folks - I enjoy being a resource. And hearing about other ways of doing things - I am amazed at how diverse nursing is, just in the area of obstetrics for instance. Deb and all those great ladies who help deliver babies have been wonderful to me as a rural OB nurse.

I like the threads about funny things that happen in the ER - as a rural ER nurse I don't see alot of the same things and so this also piques my interest.

I wouldn't consider any of those things boring.

I dunno - there are soooo many threads and sooo many posts - how can you please everyone, all the time?

My thought is WE as members hold some responsibility for how this site unfolds . . . we are allnurses.com . . . we are the ones who post . . .

I think that this board mirrors our lives . . .and society.

I don't agree that this board is heavily moderated. I think it is moderated with moderation. And that we are given many chances to not get into flame wars.

As I said - everyone has a different perspective.

Thanks for your kind post (which I shortened).

The above line deserves attention because it's true. As I've said we get complaints from members "this member is being hostile" and I scratch my head wondering what they are talking about. Others members get seriously flamed and don't make a complaint, even thrive on it. (Like me, I can handle flames very well. ) Lots of opinions and lots of experiences in how people view the same thing.

Seriously out of thousands of threads we've only shut down a small number. The last several weeks, I've only seen a few, and this is after much cleaning up.

This thread and run it's course and I'm shutting it down...........just kidding. I'm going to bed. Carry on.

I personally think that the Mods do a great job and deserve more respect than they are getting on this thread...If they close a thread it is because there is a reason and that reason could be for various things that are not obvious to others...

You know - the proof of your statement about you handling flames very well is proven by the fact that you and I are good friends. I'm a conservative right-wing wacko born again Christian and yet you still like me. :biere:

One of the really wonderful things that has come about from my experience is that people I used to think I had little in common with are actually people I want to get to know. People whose political viewpoints I disagree with - like Spacenurse and I . . . . both California girls who differ on politics but respect each other and can laugh about our differences and find out we share alot of our childhood memories.

I think this has been a good education in not having a knee-jerk reaction to another person . . . stereotypes are brought down and you get to know the real person - as real as you can get online anyway.

Ah well, Tweety you are a funny guy . . . .

Re: Closing Threads by the MODS

Well, I feel better! I've never been on probation. I have been PM'd by the mods a time or two. I get in trouble letting my fingers talk rather than using my head.

I had a neighbor using my unsecured wireless network, a very young nursing student, she reaked havoc for me, not intentionally. I explained to the mods and they were great. My network is now secure!!!

I had a really bad experience on an Italian Greyhound forum. They shamed me really bad for letting my own dog have puppies. Purebred puppies mind you. Adopted into loving homes. I know where the dogs are, we keep in touch (they're my babies after all) and two of them are with us. Even the mods called me a backyard breeder and threaten to sue me if I ever posted again. Gees, can you believe it?

The mods on allnurses are awesome!

That's it...I'm calling my lawyer .

Seriously, don't people have better things to do with their time? (referring to your Greyhound board Nazis)

Re: Closing Threads by the MODS

Yes, in my opinion most sites are less fair than this one. I've had some mixed experiences at the few sites I've been to, and this one seems the best so far, with the best posters and the moderation seems temperate.

That sounds ridiculous, Dutch. Really bad.
