My hubby has a mortorcycle and after seeing the recent rise in prices I've decided that I'm getting one this year too!
Other things are to bundle errands, get gas at places like Sam's and Costco, carpool, stay in more, walk to close places, and use online search engines to locate the best prices for gas in your area.

The biggest one I can think of is to get a hybrid if you can afford one. I'd like to get one within the next 2 years.

My employer only asks me to work on cases that I've already told them are too far away for me. I guess they think that after almost two months off from my last case that I would be desperate enough to work across the county. Yeah, as desperate as the other nurses that don't work on these cases! (Pssst! Found another employer!)

I'd like to get a hybrid, (Toyota's Prius) in the next couple of years, as well. I'm only hoping as the gas prices get higher that the cost of the cars come down! Whew!

Wouldn't THAT be nice! LOL
You do get a tax rebate for buying one, that should off-set the price a little.

If you have any control over your visits, always start at the FARTHEST out home and work back to the office, or go in a circle. Worst for gas is darting all over a three county area!!!

Also, we have company cars for visit nurses--only an AM radio and small, but uses the company gas card to fill up with!

That is what I try to do...doesn't always work out, but I try. Also, my agency has reassigned "teams" of RNs and an LPN in geographical locations so you aren't going all over the place...it has helped some.

Re: What are creative ideas for off-setting gas price rises...

My company just got new 2008 compact cars that get better mileage than the current cars other field staff are driving. It's nice that they pay for our gas with a gas card...I just spent $52 on 12.5 gallons of gas yesterday.

Re: What are creative ideas for off-setting gas price rises...

Tips I have learned

1. Gas up in the evening...prices have been going up in the morning....and it is cooler I just heard on the news when it is really hot outside you actually get less gas!!!!!

2. Stop and go traffic eats up the gas. if possible try freeways and expressways

3. Change oil on a regular basis and filter

4. Keep the load light in your car get rid of excess items

5. Get gas where you are at do not drive out of your way to get a couple cents less per gallon

6. Pray it gets better and save for a hybrid

Re: What are creative ideas for off-setting gas price rises...

At $4.00 per gallon, I may be forced to find another job closer to home. Right now I travel about an hour to west NC 3-4 days a week. I get decent mileage, but holy moley! $55.00 for 1/2 tank of gas? I won't be able to AFFORD to go to work! Soon I will be saying, "Hello, Mrs. Smith! May interest you in some oceanfront property timeshares in Arizona?"
