research HH companies?

Hey, does any one know if there is a way to research HH companies, to see how they work, how they treat their nurses, how many pts you have and what their turnover rate is?
It it only word of mouth? or is there a way to check up on the companies before you interview?

Re: research HH companies?

The only way that I know of to find out about different agencies in your area, is through word of mouth. You need to find some nurses who work or have worked for them and ask their "professional" opinions. Another way would be to find some clients. Most clients who have been in the system long term have been through more than one agency and can give opinions from the viewpoint of consumer. However, even if you are able to find any nurses or clients who are willing to give opinions, you have to keep in mind the time frame and the people that they are discussing. Some hh administrative and management types just move around from one agency to another, just like DONs and others in higher up jobs. If Samantha Jones has an excellent reputation for taking good care of her nurses and she has just taken over Y Agency after having been at J Agency for six years, if you find this out, it might be a good idea to consider working for Y Agency because you can expect good treatment from the current DOCS. It's hard to find these things out unless you socialize with nurses who get out into the community.

Re: research HH companies?

Thanks a lot for the response! I just moved to Maryland and do not know a thing about the hospitals or HH companies. I really do not know too many people to get references for HH companies. I am wondering if I should just take the plunge at an HH company that seems to meet my criteria, or if I should go back to working at a hospital or clinic until I make some more connections! Any advice?

If you really want to try home health, suggest you just jump into the pool. Since you are in MD, you should be able to find a Maxim office nearby. They are a nationwide company, whose HQ is in MD, that many people have good experiences with. Two other nationwide companies are Interim and Gentiva. Good luck with your decision.
