Need some advice from other PRN Home Health RNs
I just started working with a new home health agency. I get paid for visits and mileage only. The manager has told me that I will be doing case managements (monthly meetings without pay) as well as SOCs, RECERTs, and Discharges in addition to standard type visits.
I am finding that these visits other than standard visits have been time consuming. My time spent is not at all reflected in my pay.

Has anyone else encountered this sort of work arrangement in a PRN position?

What expectations do other agencies require of their PRN staff?

What!!!! I never heard of such a thing. If the meeting is required and benefits the company they need to pay you. I perform recerts SOCs,meetings and I get paid for all of that. My company does require that I complete any paperwork at the time of visit or in my car before I drive away...then add that on to the visit time. I think this is so that the time spent is reflected in the visit. I do not always do it this way b/c I do not feel comfortable hanging out in certain neighborhoods and in the summer it gets over 100 degrees on a lot of days. Again,if is is work that benefits the company and you are paid by the hour and not salaried you should get paid.....you can BET they are.

We were required to go to inservices and were paid for going in. I think you are being used, plain and simple.

No work should be uncompensated period. We have federal employment laws and this type of practice is discussed. The type of work done in home health per visit or prn is called "piece" work.

I am a Director of 3 HHA and all of our PRN nurses are paid for any mandatory meetings they attend. Your company could be fined by the Labor Board for that kind of practice.
