Westminster in Salt Lake City

Hi again! I have been incommunicado for a few weeks trying to sort through various challenges this summer. I wanted to let the people that are going to Wolford this Fall know that I will not be joining them since I applied to and got into the new program at Westminster college in Salt Lake.

It's been quite a ride. I have applied to several schools and have made agonizing decisions. I finally settled on Wolford. Then Westminster (via their mailing list) sent me an email saying that they have dropped their physics requirement. I couldn't pass up the opportunity to be at such a great school and so close to home. The acceptance process, from the time I sent my app to the day I found out I was in, was less than a month.

I wrote Wolford this last week. They seem like an awesome school and I would have loved it there I'm sure. But family comes first and this choice is best for my family.

Westminster is a beautiful school on the East bench of Salt Lake City. They have a brand new facility to house their nursing program. There is a state-of-the-art new sim-man lab as well. The interview process was a set of two interviews and the faculty was great to talk to. Everyone there is excited and motivated.

Anyway, have fun at Wolford and in beautiful Naples!

Re: Westminster in Salt Lake City

Congrats on getting in to Westminster. I saw that they lifted the phys. req. How about Chem...how much did you take?, how many students do they take? where are the clinical sites? I heard it is spendy about how much do you expect for the 2.5 years?

Re: Westminster in Salt Lake City

Thanks for the congrats!
Yes, they dropped the physics requirement which enabled me to apply. I took one semester of a combo organic/inorganic chem class with a lab during undergrad. And I am currently enrolled in a chemistry class this summer just to brush up. It was actually required for another program I was slated to attend but I got into Westminster so I don't technically need it for enrollment.

As far as how many students, I don't really know. I heard that they were hoping to get around 15 students for this first class. Whether they will start with that many is a question.

The clinical sites are around and in Salt Lake, as well as Boise and Blackfoot, Idaho; Cheyenne, Wyoming; and even one in Chicago (which they will use if they have to or if someone wants to go there). They will try to accomodate our requests as much as possible.

The tuition is 800.00 a credit and 50 credits...so around 40 K. That's actually comparable to a lot of other programs. There will be 10 months of didactic followed by 20 months of clinical.

ICUDOUCME?
How was the interview at Naples? You had previously interviewed there before choosing Westminster. Pretty laid back?

Re: Westminster in Salt Lake City

Hey there....good luck at Westminster. My family lives in Salt Lake and 2 of my siblings have undergraduate degrees from there and had great educations. I was out there from July 22-27th and had the chance to go up there and see The U and Westminster, and boy are both campuses beautiful. Congrats, and good luck. Keep us posted, even though I have a feeling you will be too busy =)

Re: Westminster in Salt Lake City

Thanks Jenny,

I am very excited about the school. Classes begin on August 23. I still have to go and find a place to live! Luckily my sister in law lives there and will put me up until I find a place.

a55il3m,

I found the Wolford school to be top notch from start to finish. They were warm, friendly, and communicative. They were totally upfront about how many students they would accept out of the applicants that were at the interview. They offerred many of the interviewees spots in the program during the interview. The interview itself was a mixture of personal prep questions mixed with clinical experience questions. But they didn't grill.

The new building that they will be moving to (I think in '07) looks super cool and is attached to a brand new hospital.

ICUDOUCME

thanx for the info. I talked to Gilbert and there's a interview invitation letter coming. The interview dates are in September. I loved Naples, we spent a weekend there last summer. Wow classes on the 23rd, good luck, have fun!
