Weighing the benifits of CRNA school.....

Hi there everyone,
My name is Katherine I am currently in my Sr. year of a BSN program. I have wanted to become a CRNA since the birth of my first daughter. I have run into a snag though. I live in Colorado were there are no available programs. All of the bordering states have programs. Many of these programs allow students to attend their institution for the first phase and the allow me to return to Colorado to complete the second phase.

I am married and have 2 children, do you think that it is doable to leave for a year and return home to finish. Do you think the reward would out weigh the burden? I really want to do this I just need help to find the right direction.

Re: Weighing the benifits of CRNA school.....

I’m in the same situation as well. I’m in my last year of a BSN program and the closest CRNA school is about 7 hours away. I’m trying to figure out the logistics with my husband and get some sort of time-frame nailed down (oh, and we have 3 children). From what I have gathered from other CRNAs that have families and had to travel, they said that there was enough time during the week to get your studies done so that you could go home on the weekends to spend time with family.

Something will have to be sacrificed and it will not be easy. You will have to weight the pros and cons and apply them to your own situation and family life. My husband is extremely supportive and we have been planning on me getting my masters as a CRNA since I started the pre-reqs to nursing school. He is willing to do extras during this time and we are even preparing my children somewhat so that they are eased into it when it comes up. We also have family that lives in the area that are willing to help out when schedules conflict.

Wish I could give you a more definitive yes/no answer to your question…

Re: Weighing the benifits of CRNA school.....

Just make sure it is the right time for you to take on this challenge, especially if moving to another state where there is a program is not an option. Right now, it may seem to you that it can workout by you coming home on the weekends. I hear from those that are in my program that it is very difficult to go home on the weekend because they don't get any studying done, let alone a weekend they can spare that is free from an up coming test. But, they are still making it work so it can be done.
