Hi! I am asking this for my husband who is a RN getting ready to apply for CRNA school. He will graduate in May with his BSN. I really hope I am wording this right so bare with me. He initially got his ASN in 2004. He is taking the GRE and CCRN this month. He has a 3.5 or greater GPA accross the board and has worked in ICU for the past 2 years.

He just discovered that he has to have completed transcripts to apply to CRNA school. (he thought he could apply before he finished) He has also been told results for the GRE take up to 6 weeks. He is quite discouraged. He is pretty open to go to just about any school. His first choice was Texas Weslyn and that is where he got the information above mentioned. Is there anywhere that would accept his application at this point? What should he do now? He thought he could have everything in by December 1st. Do any schools start in January? We live in Louisiana so if anyone knows of anywhere close that would be great.

I realize he should have done more research ahead of time but this is where we are now. Any encouragement would be very much appreciated. He is a really smart guy and a wonderful nurse. I want to help him get the answers he needs and do as much leg work as I can for him.

You can go onto the AACN website to find all of the accredited programs and then look at each school to figure out the application deadlines. They seem to be all over the board, but it seems as if Fall is when a majority of the deadlines happen.

If he chooses a couple of schools now, he can have the GRE scores sent for free (I do not remember how many are sent for free, but I do remember that you have to choose them when you are sitting for the test). It does take approximately 6 weeks for the scores, no matter how they are requested.

There are several programs with January start dates that have deadlines in the Spring and early Summer.

The AANA website contains the most complete list of programs and their start dates. A few schools I know of off the top of my head that have January start dates are Duke, East Carolina University, Western Carolina University, Carolinas Healthcare System/UNC Charlotte, Barry University, Samford University, Florida Gulf Coast Univ., Wolford Univ.....those should get you started, but take a look at the website below:

If your husband is serious about getting into anesthesia school, he should be doing the research on how to apply, what's required, and how long it takes to complete those requirements. This isn't a time for assumptions about requirements or how long test results and transcripts take. If the BSN is a prerequisite, I don't think transcripts from that program should come as a surprise. I also think his choice of schools should be made quite carefully, rather than applying to the school with applications accepted another month down the road.

I believe you should be speaking with your husband about this and having him conduct the research that's needed for the program HE's applying to, rather than doing it for him.

I'm from Louisiana also and I am attending anesthesia school in Panama City, Fl. I think he should be able to apply here. The name of the school is Gooding Institute of Nurse Anesthesia.

Did anybody apply to UT houston?. Its very hard to get any information from staff about the status of one's application. Any information about the application process will be valued

When I applied to my program, I was still in my last semester of my RN-BSN program. This may be program specific but I was told to submit a transcript for what was completed so they could verify hours, classes, etc and then send another final transcript upon graduation.

Also for GRE scores, I emailed them my verbal and quantitative scores as "unofficial scores" the day I took the test since you get those that day. They accepted this until my "official scores" were receieved.

However to start this Janurary will probably be impossible. My program starts in Janurary and the deadlines and interviews were done in late Spring and early Summer. He could however be ready for a program that starts in January 2009 or perhaps one that starts in the Fall of 2008.

ETS states that it takes two weeks for GRE scores to be available....mine were available over the phone within a week and mailed to me like 3 or 4 days after I was able to hear them over the phone. I just took them this summer- There's NO way it takes 6 weeks. Also, they say it takes about 3 days to process the paperwork to send it to the schools you choose...then it goes out standard US mail from new jersey to wherever...Or many schools are accepting electronically and thats much faster. You can call ets and ask which way your desired school accepts scores. My biggest thing with applying and getting into CRNA school...I've never dealt with any admissions secretary or whatever b/c it seems like they all just talk alot of BS and don't know exactly what's going on...you have to go to the top to get the right answers. Email the program director, or call and find out who the program coordinator is and they should be able to guide you with their specific rules. You can apply to most schools before your BSN is complete...

Wesleyan will accept his application without his BSN as long as he will have it completed prior to the beginning of the program. I think, though, that he seems unprepared in that he doesn't have a realistic concept of the application process. There is no way he can interview in December and start in January. Most programs interview at least 6 months in advance of the program starting. Wesleyans deadline for app. is Dec. 1 and they are interviewing the first 2 weeks of January for the 2008 class. Sounds like your hubbie really needs to work on preparing for the realities of application as well as what the program really is all about. Not trying to be harsh, just sounds like he hasn't really put much long-term thought into this career.
