managers letter of rec

I am nervous about asking my manager for a letter of rec. She is barely out on the floor and it seems that the last time someone applied to CRNA school was 2 1/2 years ago before she was manager. I'm not sure how she would take the news, RN's have been on my unit FOREVER and I'm afraid she'll think I'm some cocky newbie ( I've been on the unit for 6 months) Anyone have any thoughts on how to approach her?

I doubt she would think that you are a "cocky newbie". I think you should just ask her to write the letter/ fill out the form. (It is usually less of a hassle for her if you have some sort of recommendation form to use.) She will probably be happy to do it. If not, do you have assistant managers?

Re: managers letter of rec

Managers know that is one of their responsibilities once they take on that position. My manager takes it as a compliment once someone applies to anesthesia school, and even more so if they are accepted. It lets her know that the skills on her unit are beneficial and utilized. Believe it or not managers know more than you may think about your work ethic. You would be surprised at the things they would be able to say about you in your recommendation. Hope it all works out for you!

Re: managers letter of rec

If you are nervous about what she will write, just have her return the recommendation back to you, so you can read what she wrote. For some of my recs. when I applied, there was a question asking if you waived your right to read the recommendation, and I checked no on all of mine. This was not really because I doubted what they would right, although it was definitely a benefit, but because I wanted to send all the parts of my application to the school I applied to. That way, there was not one piece of required information missing from the application. If you have one thing missing from your application, they will not process it, and most likely will not give you the courtesy of notifying you either.

If she is a good manager, she will write a good recommendation. If she isn't a good manager, then ask someone else, like an asst. manager or a doctor. I know someone who got in on 3 drs. recs. good luck.
