Hey Everyone,

I had my first fundamentals test today and got the first C of my entire college career. I am handling it pretty well, but because I'm grad school oriented..specifically CRNA oriented (just leaving it open as an option since Im young) I'm having a really hard time accepting less than A's.

I was thinking that talking to someone rational who can assure me that I dont have to have a 4.00 to be competitive will take some of the edge off...

Any advice for me so I'm not so hard on myself?

you do not need a 4.0 to get into CRNA school. schools will list the minimum on their qualification list, usually a minimum of 3.0. However you dont want to make it a habit of getting C's, that will not look good. If you only have one or two C's and the rest A's and B's. that should be ok. how far along are you in school? many schools take alot of things into consideration. what type of class you got yoru C in, how you did in your sciences, ect... also alot of schools look at your last 60 credit hours. honestly, I did horrible my first couple semesters at school, I mean not good at all, however once I got focused and put my mind to it, I got all A's and some B's. My low grades at the beginning of my schooling career came up in my interview, and I told them the truth, I was not focused, I ddint know what I wanted to do, and I had a lot of maturing to do, they didnt knock me for that cause I still got in.

But keep in mind there are many other things that go into acceptance to CRNA school, gpa is one of them, references, experience, qualifications, and interviews are also key components. I know plenty of people who had a 3.0 or just over a 3.0 and still got in, i also hear of people who have 3.8's-4.0's and didnt get in, like i said, gpa is just one of the factors, there are many others. but do what you can to keep the grades up becuase you want to give yourself the the best opportunity.

I'm a 23 yo male that got in w/ a 3.4 gpa. One of my buddies got in w/ a 2.8 gpa. It all depends on your competition at the time you apply.

I am in Birmingham, AL. My buddy got into UT Chat with a 2.8 GPA. He had to interview at other schools several times though. When you have a low or borderline GPA, it all depends on your competition at the time you are applying. Most of these schools don't just randomly choose students b/c they "like them". They have an objective process such as a scoring system. I talked to one of my instructors about the scoring system that they used. She said that this exact tool was pretty common for other CRNA schools across the nation. It's on a 100 point scale. The higher the score, the better.
-50 points comes from the interview - I had to interview with 5 different people on one specific day. Each interviewer could give you a maximum of 10 points. This is the only sujectivity involved.

-10 points was for GPA. They plot your GPA on a scale and it gives you a score from 0 to 10.

-10 points was for the GRE. Again they used a scale to determine how many points you are awarded.

-10 points comes from your references. Those check boxes that you see on referece pages carry a numerical value.

-10 points was for Math/Science GPA

-10 points came from Last 60 hours GPA. This helps the person that goofed off early in their college career before they got serious.

So, you see that even if you have a low GPA, it can be offset by exceptional performance in any of the other areas. Hope this helps alot of people. It would have been nice if I had known this prior to applying.

they curved it to a B. I am in fundamentals.
I feel alot better now. I just have always been the curve setter and I think it was a big blow seeing that I wont always be that way in nursing classes.
