Survived my first day alone!

Today was my first day shift by myself with my own patient assignment. I can't say that I was truly alone, since I had my coworkers available to ask questions. I had a great day. I kept up with my hourly charting, didn't make any medication errors, and generally felt confident about what I was doing. I had a two-patient assignment, one of which was a ventilator patient.

This is my first job out of school. Thankfully, my preceptors have been amazing, and I was given 12 weeks of orientation.

I figured I'd post a positive experience with a new job, since I seem to read a lot horror stories about new grads at their first job.

Re: Survived my first day alone!

I just passed the boards and will start a new job on a cardiac unit so I wanted to know if you have any advice that you could give me to get over my nervousness because I am truly excited and scared at the same time

Congrats on your first day alone

Re: Survived my first day alone!

Congratulations and thanks for your positive post. I am sure that each day you will gain more knowledge, skill, and confidence.

I am at about 7 months on my own and just now starting to feel fairly comfortable in a very acute medicine unit.

Good luck to you!

Re: Survived my first day alone!

Hey!
Congrats on your first day alone! Glad that you got through it seamlessly.

My 12 weeks are almost up! I'll have my first day in about a week. So scared!

Sorry that I missed you while you were in the PICU. Maybe I'll see you if you come down for burn care.

-katie

Congradulations on your first day alone! I'm sure you walked out of there feeling estatic (but still worn out, lol). Keep up the good work and positive attitude.

That's awesome.

You're going to have "dem days" so enjoy the diamond days.

Re: Survived my first day alone!

yay you!!! What a nice feeling, isn't it? Every morning when I come home I pray to God and give thanks that 1) I was able to handle almost everything He threw my way and 2) no one died.
I know a code is gonna happen sooner or later.... The other newbie that started with me has had 2 and I've been lucky with none.

Re: Survived my first day alone!

Congratulations!!! I started my job Jan 21st and I was told they plan on us being alone in April. I'm so nervous about it, as that will only be 8 weeks on the floor.

Re: Survived my first day alone!

Hi to KGrands,
I saw that you are a Downstate Accelerated nursing grad. I started at Downstate this past June and am dying to find a grad to alot of questions. My most dire question is: did you feel prepared to be a nurse when you were done?

I suppose I can throw that question out there to all accelerated nursing grads...before I started the program I was so happy that it was short and I could be working in a short amount of time. But now that I'm in the program I'm scared at how much I have to learn. I just want to be a good and SAFE nurse!

Thanks for any advice,
C
