Been practicing my new dance routine for now 9 weeks, the nursing 2 step, and this past week was my first off of orientation. So the umbilcord cord has been cut, the tethers released, and not only am I floating on my own, I am flying.
I've got my time management mastered (I hope), charting is undercontrol, and am enjoying myself. And when I get slammed, I am not afraid to ask for help. I am really doing well.
I am keeping my positive attitude! I considered the honeymoon period to be over weeks ago. This is the real world, get use to it.
I go in expecting each shift to be as challenging as the one before. I try to keep myslef on track and try to keep moving. Like I said, this is the Nursing Two Step.
I am loving every second of working as an RN. Who would have ever though that I would be the best nurse that I could be. Completely needy pts, no problem.
Pts that drop their BP, okay call the doc and get my a saline bolus order.
Pts that fight me. can we say I am not going to hurt you.
the walkie talkies that feel sorry for themselves. Hey, I've got a wicked sense of humor for that.
I think fast and know what needs to be done.
I love this profession. At the end of my 8 hours, I know that I have made a difference. I realize that not every shift is going to go smoothly.

I learned that last week on orientation when one of all of my pts were having trouble and then one when critical when they dropped their bp into the sixties,. First major emergency and after all was said and done and it was decided comfort care after two hours of trying to raise their bp, my manager came over and just said good job. That was my hardest shift.

I love gong to work everyshift. Can't wait for tomorrows 12 hour shift.

Hi Adam,
I just want to say congrats to you & your new position as a nurse....and for making it through orientation.
I'm in my third week of orientation on the floor & in that overwhelmed phase. I hope to feel like you do when I'm eventually on my own....and I guess we are never quite on our own are we....there will always be someone there to ask for help if needed.
Thanks for sharing your experience....as a new orientee it's inspiring to hear.

Sounds like you have things really under control. I'm still learning all that! Kudos to you, you sound like a nurse I'd like to have taking care of me if I ever need it
