New nurses 1st job placement in hospital

I am a 1st process nursing student, doing a paper and need to know....
when 1st hired on by hospital, do I have preference choice on where to work, or are you automatically assigned to med-surg and for how long. Thanks

You can get a job almost anywhere when you graduate, depending on the unit and how understaffed [read desperate] they are. You are almost never "required" to work med-surg, it's just recommended. No required length, 6mos-1yr is usually "suggested"

Since you are referring to 1st process, are you a student in the US? If not, then it will depend on your country, what their requirements are.
