Meds?

Hi I have a job offer for work in a nursing home. Want to get a head start on learning some meds that are normally used with the elderly. Can someone give me a list that are regularly used that I can start getting to know? I am a new LPN and it is scarey knowing there is alot I still need to learn, but cannot wait to learn it

Here are some that I give on a regular basis on the Med/Surge floor. 95% of my pts are geriatric.

Digoxin, Labetolol, Insulin-short and long acting, protonix, miralax, coreg, cardizem, any of your meds for HTN. I will try to get a list from work and post more. I don't have my next shift until Fri though.

Levaquin, Reglan, Neurontin, zoloft, flexaril.................

Re: Meds?

I know I'm not really answering your question but just so you know, you will learn all the meds you give regularly very quickly. It won't be a couple weeks and you'll know at least what they are for and will gain more and more understanding of them all the time.

Even the 20+ yr nurses at my work (med-surg hospital floor) have to look up meds daily.

Not sure if you have one or not but a PDA may also be a great tool for quick reference. I never give a med that I don't know something about so having my PDA with me helps a lot.

After you've given them enough, you will memorize what the patients are getting. Just closing my eyes and going down the hall in my mind, here is a list I came up with:
Lanoxin
Lasix
Slow K, Potassium Elixir
Prilosec
Insulins (Humulin, Humalog)
Glucophage
Dilantin
Aricept (a lot)
Trazodone
Tylenol
Ultram
Risperdal
Zyprexa
Tamiflu (at this time of the year)
Actos
Lovenox
Cardizem
Zocor
Lipitor
metoprolol
Niaspan
Norvasc
Lactulose
sucralfate
Ditropan
Fosamax
Tamoxifen
Betoptic eye drops
Cosopt eye drops
Pilocarpine eye drops
Timolol eye drops
Artificial Tears
Ambien
Albuteral Inhaler
Combivent Inhaler
Enteric coated aspirin 81mg/day
Vicodin
Multivitamins
various antibiotics (especially at this time of the year)
Pyridium for UTIs
