I'd just like to thank all of you for the invaluable advice and links I've had from your forums. I just finished my course in December, gained my Diploma and my Degree and start a 3 month secondment on 11 February. I'm scared stiff but excited too and am looking forward to my new career. I'm 58 so I guess you could say I'm a late starter!
Good luck to everyone who's taking up new employment and I'm sure I'll be taking advantage of the wealth of knowledge available on the site. You are all just soooooo friendly and helpful - thank you.
I'm curious, what is a "secondment"? Sorry, I've never heard that term in the States. Well congrats on graduating, it is never too late to go back to school for something you love! Good luck to you
Secondment usually refers to a temporary assignment to another area. As in floating. Some secondments might be for a fixed period of time, say several months where you'd remain employed by Unit A but you'd be working on Unit B. Special projects are often considered secondments. You retain your position in your regular place of employment but you go work on a project (such as designing a new ICU) and when that's done you go back to your original job.

Hi,
This website is a great resource! Just an intro., I am in an evening ADN progam I am in 2nd semester and love it. We start clinicals next weekend. I am very excited. Apart from school I am a SAHM of 3. I love the evening program, with being a SAHM, it is the only way for me to finish my degree. Good luck to all. I look forward to getting lots of info from this website as I move along the program
Hello, I am a first year nursing student from Canada. I found this website during an online search by accident. I thought it was neat to be part of a website that could help me in my venture towards this new career that i have chosen.
Welcome, mlc29. You might not want to read too many of the posts on this forum... it'll scare you off before you've even got your feet wet! On the other hand, maybe it's a good idea to know what you're getting into... depends on your perspective, I guess. Since you're a student, you might find a lot of information and support specific to your current needs in the Nursing Student forum. There's a tab at the top of the screen that says "Students"; click on it and you'll find all the student forums. Just realize that there will be differences in curriculum and approach between schools and parts of the world; at the same time there are a lot of commonalities. And you can check out the Canadian Nurses forum through the "Region" tab, to "International" to "Canadian Nurses". Happy hunting.
I'm a newbie RN, graduated in May, started working at a Peds ER since June, and I have to say that this website helped me get through the rough times and offered great advice, so I figured I would finally join!
