How to choose an area of nursing

Hi,

I'm getting ready to graduate from nursing school and I'm not sure how to choose what area to work in. Home Health is an area of interest, but I have been told I need experience in a hospital setting for a year 1st. Does anyone have any sugesstions?

I plan to put all the specialties I'm interested in on a dart board and throw a dart blindfolded while adequately smashed at my celebratory graduation party.

If I'm lucky I'll hit something on the board.

Think about which clinical rotation you liked best and the rotations you didn't like so much. Eliminate those. Then go through the rotations you liked and write a list of what you liked about each and narrow from that. Make sure whatever you choose, it will be in something that you wont mind attending classes for and continuing to learn about daily. Decide whether or not you like the ICU setting or the floor setting, step down even. LOL, I wouldn't recommend you throwing a dart. I graduate in May, and I chose PICU for myself. I work on an ICU now as a care partner (cna basically) and I really like the ICU setting and the type of patients. I love kids, so I coupled the two together. Just try to find out what you like. Hope this helps and good luck!

Re: How to choose an area of nursing

Apply for everything and it will find you.

I always thought going through school I would work in OB. yet OB was not hiring at the time of my graduation. Then the ICU mgr talked to me and offered me a sched that worked perfect for my family. Next thing you know I am an ICU nurse and could not be happier. I couldnt imagine being anywhere else.

Recently the OB mgr had some changes in her staff and she came and talked to me about working in her dept and I never thought this would happen, I turned her down.

Best of luck. Dont limit yourself.
