[S.T.A.C.E.Y]

Today marks the final day of my first year practicing as an RN. Its over, and I really can't believe it. One year ago I never could have imagined how far I've come.

- I've been doing courses, workshops and certificates like crazy. Education has never interested me more.
- Codes no longer scare me, and I can now rationalize why most things are being done, rather than just doing them.
- As I've been studying ECGs & Cardiology I've now caught myself teaching these things to new staff, where only eight months ago I was the one learning this stuff!
- I just worked for 10 hours straight without a break, and it didn't bother me one bit.
- I have become pretty familiar with the ACLS guidelines, and can now follow right along with the docs or often get a little ahead of them with the prep.
- I can actually stay awake right through night shift without falling asleep on the keyboard while typing, or yawning constantly.
- I have stood up for myself when doctors have been mouthing off to me, and have grown one hell of a backbone (theres still a way to go, but I've come pretty far!)
- My success with IVs and blood draws has grown significantly, and I can now handle most of these without extra help.

Well, thats a mini list of accomplishments from the past year. I never thought this year would go so fast but it REALLY has! And, now that I'm here I'm already thinking about all the other wonderful thigns I can do with my nursing career.

Anyways, for all those who are just starting their first year.....hang in there. That first year will fly by faster than you think. Pretty soon you'll be questioning the docs, teaching patients/families/new staff, and doing things you never thought you'd have the ability, confidence or knowledge to do so soon.

Good for you! That has got to be a great feeling. I still can't get the IV sticks or blood draws down.

Congratulations, that is so awesome! I graduated in 06 and had a very rough start to nursing. I then got pregnant and left and kind of wish i would have stuck it out. I'm thinking in august when my daughter turns one I will start looking for a position again and just promise myself to shoot for getting one year under my belt and then to see how I feel about things. congrats again to you!!

Amen! It goes by super fast! I'll hit a year on June 18th and even though I'm not there yet, it still seems like it's just flown by. Insane......
