Can I get some advice??

I know this thread probably posted before.....but i am new to this forum. I am a new nurse just graduating. I got a job as a nurse at a nursing home simply because I love working for the old people. Nursing to me is all about caring but not until I am working. This is my second weeks working as a nurse and I am so depressed. Thinking of walking into that place is like walking into hell!!! My co-workers are so means to me. I don't have their years of experienced so I asked a lot of questions. Two days ago, one of my resident fell and I don't know how to fill out the paperworks I asked and....."you should know how to do that." One of my resident hasn't voided for more than 8 hours, I went and changed catheter instead of flushing it. They just give me this look like I am very DUMB!! the guy who orientated me wrote a letter to the DON and said I shouldn't be by myself at all because I am incapable of being a nurse. They have to find someone came in to watch me doing my jobs last night. I am new so I don't know much about everything around but I am willing to learn. I just need time to get used to this "nurse" instead of "nursing student". I want to give up but nursing is my career goal. I enjoy doing my jobs but not the co-workers. One of the guy who did oriented me said "I should think about working as a nurse." They did lower my self-esteem and made me feel nursing is not for me. Please give me some advice on this.

Re: Can I get some advice??

My advice is to get a new job. No responsible employer would expect a new grad to work without supervision until after they had given her a proper orientation. The fact that your employer did not provide you with a reasonable orientation is evidence enough that it is not a good place to work.

Find yourself an employer who understands the needs of a new graduate nurse -- the need for an orientation with a preceptor for at least a few weeks. Once you have done that, resign your current job and start over working in a better place.

Re: Can I get some advice??

some nurses are so rude ... i would quit and tell then to stick their job where the sun don't shine .. and in my letter of resignation i would tell them how poorly you were treated how unfair you co-workers treated you... you don't deserve to be abused....

Re: Can I get some advice??

Yep.....need to look for a new job. I wouldn't put up with that. I got my RN almost one year ago and was looking to work in nursing homes b/c I love working with the elderly. Finally decided to work in a hospital associated with my diploma-RN program which happens to have a very large elderly population. I've been working an extremely busy med/surg step down telemetry unit and have the best of both worlds....working with the elderly and in a hopping telemetry unit getting wonderful experience. Good luck to you!

Thank you for everyone advices. I hate to quit the first job of my nursing career but I don't see the point of staying where I have no respect.

Re: Can I get some advice??

Based on the fact that they have another nurse watching you rather than assisting you, tells me that you should not stay there. The supervisory staff should not let the other nurses gang up on you. Unfortunately, this type of behavior is common. So you need to develop some level of self esteem or else they will run you off from every place and you will end up at home not working or working as a CNA forever. Try to stick it out while you are actively looking for another employer. Good luck to you.

Re: Can I get some advice??

NEVER let anyone tell you that you are incapable of becoming a nurse. and most of all, DON'T BELIEVE IT. you became a nurse for a reason and that's why you're here today. it's unfortunate that your fellow employees aren't a good support system, especially since you are still a new RN.

if you are unhappy there, find a new job. good luck!
