I'm in the Family NP program, and I'm currently working in Neonatal (during the last 3 years since graduating from nursing school). Would you recommend transferring to a different unit (such as GYN or Med/Surg) to get more nursing experience with adults? I haven't assessed adults since nursing clinicals (over 3 years ago).

I'd say yes. I can't believe a family NP program wouldn't have already told you to get some adult and general peds experience or required it for admission. NICU is actually the worst place you could be, in my opinion. The only NPs who deal with NICU pateints are NNPs. To be an effective FNP, I'd think you'd benefit from at least a year of experience in each of the following areas: med-surg, OB, and peds. Good luck!

Have you considered the ER? You would see the whole spectrum of ages there, plus you would probably see some similar complaints that you would get in a family practice office, especially if there is a fast-track area.

Is there a reason why you would rather go the FNP route vs. the NNP route?
