I have just accepted a position as a Unit Manager at a LTCF, most likely in the Skilled Unit. Any Unit Managers out there that could tell me the pros and cons of working as a Unit Manager. Any information would be helpful and anything you can add would be appreciated.

I worked as a UM prior to returning to school for my RN. I liked it, fast paced, never a dull moment. My advice....make your expectations clear from the beginning. My staff always knew my standards and goals and that I would not compromise these.

Be firm, fair and consistant when it comes to staff issues and care. Organization and flexibility are critical to you success. Keep your lines of communication open with your superiors and one ear open to your subordinates.

I did alot of focus on "team building". Getting everyone to buy into being a family was essential to taking a broken non-functional unit into a cohesive group.

Cons...well, I won't lie, mine was a rough job. Some days it felt like I had more on my plate than I would ever get done. I worked long hours and was always on call. You have to designate your "me time" For me it was earmarking family time and not letting anything touch that time...it was sacred.

I wish you the best of luck. It can be a very rewarding position, it is what you make it.

I've been an RN for five years now and decided to venture into Management. I saw an opening, applied, offered was made, and I accepted. I have always worked in ICU, OR, and even D.O.N. at a Cosmetic Surgery Facility. I worked some on LTC and I did enjoy it, was in training to become supervisor and had an injury and was out of work for awhile in the LTC and started working as a Substitute School Nurse (love it too), but wanted more hours so looked for another job. I like bedside, but want away from it. I always thought I would enjoy management and now heres my chance. I'm excited, but nervous. I know LTC is another world.

I do plan on holding a meeting with my Unit to let them know what I expect of them and what they can expect of me. I want an open door policy and yes, I want it like our own little family. Teamwork is a must!
