Last week I resigned my position as DON of a 112 bed facility. I accepted a contract with a local staffing agency at a hospital an hour away from me. This is where I worked prior to taking the DON job. It is a great hospital. The contract is on the tele floor where I would never have more than 5 patients, I would work 3 12's and make a butt-load of $$$, but would have to drive. Well today the powers-that-be at the LTC facility offered me the MDS coordinator job or I could be a relief charge nurse occasionally. I am leaning toward relief charge on a PRN basis but what about the MDS thing?? Is this something I might enjoy? I really don't mind long-term care, I just didn't want the responsibility that goes along with the DON position. Any thoughts on the subject??

If you are done with your DON position it might be better if you moved forward and did not look back. It might be difficult for you to step down as a DON and find yourself in a position at the same place taking orders from someone, or the new DON might feel somewhat intimidated by you. You sounded really positive about the position offered to you at the hospital. When I left long term care I went to work for a nursing registry, got paid twice as much with 1/2 of the headaches. The MDS position can be just as much responsibility and work as a DON if not more.
