RN pushing med carts in LTC...

I have worked the majority of my nursing profession in LTC as LPN I have upgraded as a RN....at this point I want to venture out and explore more options simply because my DON would rather keep her beloved friends whom are LPN's in office---MDS & Medical Records not that I think I am too good to work on the floor but I don't see myself transitioning with this facility of 5 yrs soon....have any other RN's experienced this in LTC...thanks

Re: RN pushing med carts in LTC...

In our faclity, RNs do push med carts - if they remain on the unit. It just depends on how many nurses are on, but an LPN would never be in charge over an RN pushing a med cart. On some units RNs do rotate between charge, med nurse and patient care. Each unit is different.
We have 500 beds, so there are many other opportunities including eve/night supervisors, nurse managers, etc.

I would encourage you to move on, since you can see that you are not going to get a great deal of experience over what you did as an LPN.

Re: RN pushing med carts in LTC...

I think that since you have "upgraded" perhaps, yes, you should find something else to do. A nurse, no matter what the degree, should be in geriatrics because that is where they WANT to be. It isnt a competion where one is better than the other. WE are there in LTC because that is where WE feel WE belong, and where WE are needed. If one feels that they have "upgraded" then they should find the place that suits that upgrade the best. I do personally feel that any nurse should keep options open and never ever "settle" for anything less than what you want. I hope you find what you are looking for- I can tell that this particular facility is not it!! Good luck in your future, and be proud of that RN!!!!

Re: RN pushing med carts in LTC...

look elsewhere. If you don't want to "push a med cart" and would like to use your RN doing something else, you can. I've done the supervisor, RNAC, ADON thing and now I kinda just enjoy being a med nurse. I still am somewhat of a supervisor, but I punch the clock and go home when I am done. I work prn, so that makes a difference. If I was to do FT again, I prob wouldn't take this route.

As far as waiting at your current facilty. Don't.
