LTC/nursing homes is my goal...

Hi, I have not even started school yet and have just begun posting on this forum. Tonight I found this section on geriatric nursing, and I am so thankful. I have always loved the elderly. I love to interact with them and hear their stories. I think it started when I was about 10 and my grandfather was in and out of nursing homes and hospitals. I would feel such a sadness for the residents when we would go to visit him. I actually remember thinking at the time that when I got older, that was what I wanted to do, "take care of old people." One of my grandmother's died about 10 years ago, and one of the things she said to me when I was visiting her in the nursing home one day was, "You should be a nurse." She was probably just saying that because she was my grandma, and I was her only granddaughter, but I told her that I had been thinking about it for years.

Anyway, I could go on and on, but I just wanted to say thanks to all of you for your messages on here that just made me feel even more inspired to want to get out and do something for our seniors! I truly hope that one day I can be the one holding their hand or hugging them good night.

Re: LTC/nursing homes is my goal...

Good for you, I work in a skilled nursing home and I love it. Someday when I get my RN and beyond I will probably move on, but for now I am happy. The place I work at, I went from a CENA to a LPN, I've been there for four years. The floor I work on is a rehab floor so I see a little bit of everything from high aquity(sp) to short term stays. I also take care of the elderly. I have gotten very close to some of them and their families. Good luck to you.

Re: LTC/nursing homes is my goal...

GET THE PARTY STARTED, ANOTHER PERSON HAS SEEN THE LIGHT THAT IS LTC! I wanted to work with the elderly since before I started my training too and 4 yrs since qualiifying I am still working with the elderly and loving it. Its not the residents that give you the s**t (well they do sometimes, quite literally) but the home managers. As long as you remember the reasons you wanted to work in ltc and see the value people like yourself can be, then the management are just a pain in the ass that comes and goes.
