just needing a couple of answers

Hey everyone! Just wanted to ask a question....I am fixing to start school in Jan.) I am 28 with 2 kids and a Hubby(which is my biggest kids..should of counted him)...anyways, my question is...I was wondering about maybe going to CNA or some call it CNT training and then you can work in a nursing home..but I know that nursing homes used to be really bad....and it is not that I couldnt handle it because I enjoy older people..I am afraid that I would be fired for the things that go on...Does anyone know if "nicer" nursing homes are like this? We have a couple in town that are fairly new...it is a AL place..with I guess a "nursing home" with it..or do they hire CNT's for AL homes?

Any answers..suggestions will be helpful...I thought if I took the classes and worked a little that it might help me get into the nursing school easier along with my grades..but will it help me out a little with nursing school and procedures...?

Thumbs up

I work in an assisted living area of lg. complex. I used to work in the health center (sub-acute area). I never thought I would like it as much as I do. The press comes down really hard on nursing Home horror stories, but there are some good ones out there! I think the experience would be great for you. If there is a place your interested in...go visit. What I have done in the past is to just go there & see for yourself. Just by observing one can usually tell if a facility is well run, and the residents taken care of. I have just walked in as if I am there to visit a resident, or made an appt. to take a tour. Try to catch staff upon leaving, and get their input. I wish you the best in your Nurs. program. If you love the elderly and respect them, you will do well.
