hi all I have been working 6 months at a geriatric ward. I feel like I am burn out. So depressing cause when I say I work in geriatrics people seems to feel that I am on a holiday! Guess I donīt feel that way!We have patient with teminal ascites, lungfaliure, ami, comatome, tuberculose, cancer..and most of all dementia and post organis syndrome,sepsis.. not to mention alll the basics...the funny thing is ( this is why I am freaked) WE only have to do pt things( I am danish;-) for forty patients ...I CANīT WORK WITH THIS CROWD Of PATIETENS IF I CANT TAKE THEIR VITALS!! I am a new nurse, I have too take care off two student an a new nurse that does not speek my laguenge!!!!Donīt think itīs funny AND best off all I got yelled at by my charge nurse for not cleening all the bins!!!what the f...

by the pt I meant BLOODPRESSURE;-) Lol and I am not compairing countries,,I have a BA and are also quilified to work in the states;-) I am just looking for people working in ltc who can understand.( I allways write that I am Danish if I am tired and it affects my spelling;-) Lived in NY for three years ( and yes we do have potatoes and I am not forced by the goverment /husbund to work) ..freqeuntly asked ;-)
The most important thing for you and your residents is that your heart is in your job and with your residents. I get hacked off having to empty bins etc as well but you gotta think that helps your residents in some way (albeit probably very indirectly).
We are told to think of it as holistic care.So that includes everything from washing their clothes and setting breakfast trays(done by night carers) to cleaning up spills,"they chuck it,we clean it!".Somewhere in there we also manage the more traditional roles of meds,vitals and general nursing duties!
