My mom is 82 years old and has mild Alzheimer's. I am thinking of hiring a certified elder law attorney. I have heard that these lawyers can help you to avoid the catastrophic costs of nuring homes or in home nursing care. Are these attorneys really helpful or not? Thanks

I used one for my dad- she was a big help in advising when and how to transfer assets, applying for state assistance (court appearance required in our case), and guiding us through probate later, but the whole thing (the illness, long term care) was financially devastating anyway. You should at least visit with one to ask your questions before making a decision.

I'm glad to hear that these lawyers are helpful.I had talked to my mom's lawyer and he had recommended that we get in touch with an elder care attorney. Sorry to hear that your situation with your dad turned out to be financially devasting anyway.

Just give a thought to what kind of facilities in your area take folks on first day medical assistance. These would probably be county homes. Maybe not where you would want a loved one to be placed?

Oh dear I didn't think of that. Do you think most local nursing homes would accept her or just make excuses for not taking her? No I wouldn't want her in a county home as I have heard they are even worse than my local nursing homes.
