Cool

Sorry, Here is the rest of my post. Got kinda carried away pressing to many buttons.

35-year-old male here starting my second semester trying obtain my ADN. After being an automotive/diesel fleet mechanic for 14 years, I decided to changes to a career in which I would be generally more appreciate for what I do. Hospitals are also warm in winter and cool in the summer unlike some of the shops I've worked in.

At first it use to bother me that I was entering a predominately female profession. When I would tell somebody, especially other men, I was going to school to be a RN they would give me a strange look as if I were either dumb or gay. Well, I would just let them think what wanted to. Now as I am entering my second semester it really bother me any more. My family and friends have come to accept my decision and have become supportive of me.

Just an update to my post, we had orientation yesterday...what a long but exciting day. I believe our male populus grew to 10 or 12 from the 6 that I originally counted. The instructors seemed to be thrilled that there were many more males in this class than have been in previous classes. Our first Nursing 1 class starts Monday...I am already studying the objectives and planning my extra hours to spend in the clinical lab...I am finally on my way, it sure does feel good.

I fully anticipate to be called on often for "guy" things like that.

Just to add my two cents: I am a 52 year-old ex-postal worker (24 years), who is in school for a post-master's Nurse Practitioner certificate. I received my RN in 1997, and work in the SICU for the VA. My son is an Army medic (10 months in Iraq), and he, too is thinking of becoming an RN.

I think it's just a great profession for men. Or women, for that matter.
