There have been ups and downs over the years in nurse availability. Employers massage the market to try to relieve alledged shortages...Feds stick their noses into it once in a while too, bringing in nurses from other countries: Having once been pretty active in commodities futures trading, I love the shortages. Supply and demand moves the price of everything. If the 'market' is left alone, and nurses do not allow themselves to be abused with regard to Pt/Nurse ratios, it will cause pay rates to rise to a proper level. My belief is that the more
men there are in senior professional nurse roles, the more the pay will increase to appropriate levels....And NO, I am not calling for more unions! I'm suggesting that nurses conduct themselves as the professionals they are. Lead, follow, or get out of the way. I do not need a physician referral to become better than I am. (That is not to say that, as a professional, I do not appreciate the support of another professional.) But it must happen as a matter of mutual respect. That does not flow from any kind of manipulation.

Good luck in school, FNP. I'm in eastern PA after traveling for 11 years looking for a great place to work. Came across two but we couldn't come to terms at the time.
Seems like the increase in men in nursing correlates to the increase in pay rates the ladies started. It does not hurt that nursing is being viewed as a separate and professional discipline (finally) and that females began opting for more lucrative and prestigious employnemt. Uncle Milty was right!

P.S.
Could someone answer this for me... I'm taking the ADN program and was hoping to finish my BSN right after... While doing the BSN I wanted to work in Med Surg, and gain that experience to continue on for my master right after my BSN... I want to be a CRNA. I'm just curious is all this possible or do you have to work longer in Med Surg before you can apply for the CRNA program?

Lots of good answers preceeded this but the ICU/ED /Critical Care experience will make CRNA an easier transition. Check with the admissions department and that will help you fine tune your admission resume. I wrote an essay about nurses working for free in the late 80's and was nearly dismissed from my nursing program. But it is as true now as then: what would yo be willing to pay for competent, professional nursing care for your ailing child, or mother, or spouse? Compare that to the pay we receive and you can see that we volunteer our services for the tips and leavings at this healthcare table.

Lastly, I am here, also, after numerous convolutions in my career path. But it feels like the right place at this time. We have much to learn from those who blazed this trail and hopefully we can leave this a better place than we found it.
