Hi,
I'm relocating to Dc from Orlando, Fl. Can anyone tell me about the market, concerning average pay etc. I currently work in the OR and have ED experience too. 5 year nurse. Lastly, does anyone live in the DC area and how is the city life there? No sugar coating.

First of all, let me say welcome to DC! I currently reside in Manassas, Virginia, which is about 45 minutes away from DC.

I'm not sure about the pay for nurses (I'm currently a student LPN), but I can tell you that the cost of living here will astound you! (even compared to Orlando).
Depending on how close to DC you live, a 1 bedroom apartment can run you anywhere from 800-1400 a MONTH.

I am in Maryland. The hospitals in DC are mostly union - you can decide if you think that's good or bad. They have a reputation of paying higher than the surroundings areas, but it's REALLY expensive to live close and hell to commute in.

I have a friend who recently interviewed at Georgetown University Hospital - they run shuttles from nearby nice living areas - and also pay for relocation.

There is a massive shortage here, so be sure to interview everywhere before you decide: Washington Hospital Center, NIH (no ED there) are just a couple more. Ask about parking - some places require new hires to shuttle in.

Well I work at WalterReed in D.C and i know they pay the nurses on my ward about 56,000 starting off. I do know the nurse here has like 1 and a half years of experience which is less than yours if I am not mistaken. But the other person was right when they talked about living expensives. I pay around 1300 for a two bedroom. Thankfully gas is included but not all placed are like this and many are more, especially if you want to live closer to the city. I personally dont find the commute that bad since I work the night shift, As long as you leave in enough time I guess. Hope it helps. Also piggy backing off the other person there are plenty of jobs here, that is for sure.
