Re: Please Take Our Men in Nursing Survey

What is your age?

31

Are you currently working as a nurse?

yes

How long have you been a nurse?

two years

Did you graduate from a nursing program outside of the U.S.?

Nope. In Iowa

What area do you work in now? (e.g. – ER, teach, etc.)

What nursing-related degree or certification(s) do you have?

Just my RN.

What nursing-related degree or certification(s) do you intend to pursue?

Are you currently a nursing student?

yes, currently in a RN-BSN

Is nursing a second career?

Yes.

If YES, briefly describe previous career(s). (e.g. – butcher, baker, candle maker)

My first career was as a pastor, but I couldn't come up with the scratch to pay for my theology student loans, so here I am.

Were you in a management position in your previous career?

I guess you could call it that. I was managing the church, but they hired me, but I led them....whatever.

Do you believe that people expect you to become a nurse manager because of your gender?

Not that I have heard.

Do you intend to become a nurse manager? (MAYBE & DON’T KNOW also acceptable)

Probably at some point.

Are/were you a paramedic?

No, although I wish I had been.

Were you a medic in the military?

Nope.

Do you have a previous college degree?

Yes.

If YES, how many years prior to nursing school?

BS in Theology, Master of Arts in Theology.

Were you a pre-med student?

I was a pre-med student at one point, then decided that nursing was better suited to my long term goals.

Have you experienced NEGATIVE discrimination as a nurse or nursing student?

Yes, but mostly by patients. Some women can't handle the thought of a male nurse. Also, I worked at a nursing home, and a patient of mine who I was very close to (we talked a lot as I helped her ambulate up and down the halls), all of a sudden her ADL's took a nosedive and she needed help dressing, toileting, etc. Her daughter came out and said, I don't want any men helping my mother. As if we are all rapists and stuff. That bugged me.

Have you experienced POSITIVE discrimination as a nurse or nursing student?

I take it that you mean "got paid more than equal level female nurses" or something comparable. If that's the question, then the answer is "no."

Picky RN

I dont know, But I would like to see more smiling and happy people that work in the hospital, I think that if we do view our Calling instead of our career that might help us, Also I like to say "thank you " alot. Most people on the floors dont use those two little words, I think that helps I get strange looks.

If YES, how many years prior to nursing school?

Have you experienced NEGATIVE discrimination as a nurse or nursing student?OH YES, Mainly that I am a Male Nursing student and that instructors ask if its okay for me to come into womens rooms and just bring the women into the guys rooms and dont think anything with it. I also found out that men DO NOT understand how to multi task ( lol told her No but we can have two or three girlfriends at once and they dont know it, but we cant multi task ( instructor didnt like that answer ))

Have you experienced POSITIVE discrimination as a nurse or nursing student?yes, Most pt.s listen to me more then they do the nurses. Pts tend to think I am a doctor instead of a nurse and people usually dont act up when I walk into a room. I can talk to men pts on a level where they are comfortable (once they decide I am not gay)

THANKS! PLEASE ADD ANY COMMENTS BELOW
Comments ? I think being a nurse is one of the hardest and rewarding thing that I can do in my life. For a bunch of hours I am the best friend of someone and they look to me for comfort help and advice. I can touch so many people in one day and they can also touch me. I think its wonderful and I hope this never goes away.

P.S. to anyone who does read this that is or is going into the nursing or health care profession

Thank You for caring about me, my family and friends !!!

Shotsy !!!
