Male Nurse Calender

Here's a quick question for you guys. The fire department in my city puts out an annual calender to raise money for the dept etc. This calender shows a bunch of guys shirts off and all that. Anyway, a couple of weeks ago myself along with a few other male nurses at my hospital were asked by a PICU nurse (male) if we would be willing to be part of a male nurse calender similar to that of the fire fighters. The purpose of course is to raise money for the pediatric health foundation. To get to the point 12 of us agreed and the ball started rolling until a few vetran (female) nurses put up a HUGE fuss stating that we would be promoting the "nurse as a sex symbol" image. Now correct me if I'm wrong, but the last time I checked male nurses ranked just above plumbers in the fantasy image for the average woman. I'm not saying were not on the list but we do tend to fall past Fire fighter, Army, police... At any rate, a few of the guys are feeling guilty thinking that perhaps these women (very vocal women) may have a point. It's not going to be an X-rated calender or anything. The guy that started all of this is a little apprehensive about it now because of this. Anyway most of us that were asked said we would be happy to wear nothing but scrub pants, a stethoscope and a smile. And besides, I know my girlfriend said she'd buy one (there's at least $20 for the sick kids) Anyway I was just curious about what you fella's might feel about it (last I checked I never met a guy that didn't mind being thought of as a sex object, kidding...maybe) anyway I'm curious to hear what your opinions might be.

Hurm...I'd say do it, you'd be helping a nice cause. I mean really, if you don't do it, would that single handedly erase the preconcieved notions about nurses being a sex object? Nope, that'll never go away...Would you make it worse? Not really, it's not lewd. Besides it's for charity.

Thumbs up Re: Male Nurse Calender

Hi guys, sorry girl nurse here but I just wanted to say I would totally buy a calendar full of hot male nurses. I'd but some for some of my other female nurse.

I think some nurses get too worked up (pardon the pun) over the image of nurses . Obviously there is a time and place for paranoia of the image of nursing, but some people need to get a grip. Your calendar isn't going to make the nursing shorteage any worse than it already is. If you guys get together and do the calendar please let us know, I'd be good for a few of them.

too funny, lol. come on now nurses have been a sex symbol for years. maybe not male nurses but, female nurses sure have, at least some of them. so why not guys too. if i was asked to do one i would no dout. now if the vetran female nurses said your promoting nurses as a sex symbol. i would have to say yep! and helping kids at the same time, life is good. did you want a signed copy? maybe even give one to them for X-mas (guessing the calender will be for next year).

Re: Male Nurse Calender

I hate to be the only stick in the mud here, and I agree that it would be for a good cause but....
I get enough inappropriate comments and sexual inuendos from both female and male patients, some of whom are old enough to be my parent or grandparent.
The public certainly doesn't need even more fuel to the fire in their sexual fantasies about their nurses taking care of them.
God knows there are plenty of female "nurses" in porno films, and I would hate to see the Pandora's box of the sexually inviting male nurse opening up.

Back in my single days, I got to a point where I literally dreaded the "what do you do for a living" question when meeting guys because it always followed with sexual comments about me being their nurse taking care of them. It was funny for about the first 500 times I heard that stuff and then it got old quick.

I've experienced enough embarrassment to our profession in the comments made both on this BB as well as in the workplace.
It never fails that some 22 year old student or new grad male (or even worse, someone my age who should know better) seems to think it's cool or funny to exclaim that he entered nursing "to meet chicks."

I can't imagine what people think of our profession whenever a guy like that goes out in public and tells everyone that he's a nurse.

The calander has good intentions, but male nurses really don't need anything that gives a male bimbo mentality to the profession.
Nonetheless, I'm very much against censorship as well, so go for it guys.

humm, i dont know. i am glad you say go fot it. but for the reputation of male nurses, well, being refered to as a male bimbo sounds better than being thought of as a gay nurse. although i have never been mistaken for being gay to my knowlegde. in most circles if you say i have a male friend who is a nurse, the first thought nowadays is , must be gay. would rather that group say a male nurse, must be areal player.

I've mentioned this before on some other thread but our only male nurse bought us a beefcake calendar last year . . . . not male nurses but good looking males. It hung in the supervisor's office.

You have to have a sense of humor.

Wasn't there a calendar with older women that was a fundraiser too? Help me remember . .
