Just started school..

I just started school. Im very determined to obtain a BSN. At 36, I have various reason's why I want to become an RN. Any way, just curious about suggestions about schooling, making sure I do well, then pass the test in the end to get my license. Any suggetions?

I've heard alot of Non-Nurses, "oh the schooling is hard". I believe you get out of anything what you put into it. So, I don't put much merit into that.

Re: Just started school..

Stuff that worked for me:

1. Find a good study group. Stick to it.
2. Draw up a timetable. STICK TO IT. Time management is critical to success in nursing school.
3. Warning! The deadline is closer that it appears!
4. Do remember to take regular breaks and time out - no matter how impossible it may seem at times.
5. The golden mantra - "This too shall pass!"
6. The stress is incredibily high. Find effective outlets for relief.
7. Remember that it's ok to feel like a complete imbecile earlier on in the program. As you advance (especially with more clinical hours), you'll start seeing the bigger picture and will slowly piece things together.
8. It's pointless to fret and worry about every test and quiz and grade and so on and so forth. Pick your battles.
9. There is only one road :
#1 - The professor is always right
#2 - If you want to succeed, see #1

(Thanks Timothy!)

10. Last but not least - say goodbye to any kind of "life" you had or are currently enjoying. Accept yourself as one of the "condemned". It just makes it easier...

Re: Just started school..

jkolberg, I have heard the same thing over and over!

I am 28 and starting tomorrow a LPN Program then bridging to a RN Program. I am anxious, nervous and can definately feel your pain. So we can go through this together, just know you are not alone and I think the both of us can make it through, one way or another.

Re: Just started school..

That list is too funny...and VERY true.

I am 39 and just finished year three toward my BSN at Temple University in Philly. During the semester, and this is partly due to working 22-25 hrs. per week, I live/eat/breathe schoolwork. It is much harder than my pre-requisites were, and it was tough to get into the program at all.

Having said that, I am having a great time, and am so glad I decided to not only go back to school, but specifically to go for nursing.

Whoo-hoo...first post!
