Finding a job harder than school and NCLEX put together

I am a male LPN just graduated and passed NCLEX in august. I have been putting out resumes, filling out applications ect.... and have not heard anything, yet most of the females I went to school with all had jobs and were working before they even took NCLEX. The applications say equal opportunity employers, but some of the directors well tell you straight up they dont hire males. Any suggestions?

Get a lawyer. You could write a nice letter asking why you were turned down, what you could do in the future to enhance your candidacy for the position, and see what they have to say. They might not put the no male policy in writing, but then again they might so it's worth a try. Then you won't have to work.

Seriously, sex discrimination violates federal law. You may have to take action via your state's EEOC office. I've been down that road in a race discrimination case and it's a tough road let me tell ya. Let the lawyer do it for you if you can. Also, seek the assistance of your congressperson, they are there to serve you, and this is a federal issue. I got fantastic results when I got my congressman involved, better than I hoped for.

Good Luck.

wow, sorry for your troubles. when i applied for my job a few months ago, the nurse manager actually told me she liked hiring males (maybe I got lucky) but she obvioulsy liked me as she gave me the opportunity. I would think you should be able to land a job soon. Good Luck!!

Are you only applying at hospitals? I assume you're an LPN based on your username. LTC jobs are usually easier to obtain than hospital jobs.

I have never had any problems finding jobs at LTCs. In fact, my workplace has several male nurses, including one male weekend supervisor.

Re: Finding a job harder than school and NCLEX put together

Well maybe I was looking in the wrong places, I applied at a few private nursing homes, so they can do what ever they want there. They said that the older female residents are sceeved out by male nurses. you know how the elderly are back in their day male nurses were unheard of, so I really dont blame them, its all about making the residents/patients happy. I did get the ball rolling on this job at the VA Hospital which seems nice. I will let you all know if i get the position, its a long drawn out process so who knows, i might be an RN before i get that LPN position.

This might be a route you should consider. Nothing wrong with being an LPN of course, but your opportunites will be greater as an RN.

I would try to stay out of LTC and focus on hospitals or clinics but thats just me and my preferences. Maybe try an inpatient rehab program also-
