Re: best areas for male nuses....

I am in the OR and i just graduated been working in the OR for about 9 months though

my training is very long in fact a year long
but i love it
i get to work with plenty of other guys !!!
and i also get to scrub on occasion
i would highly suggest it
i also work 8 hr shifts and have all holidays paid off and all weekends off

!!!!
and yes they do pay well i work in houston tx at MD Anderson (#1 cancer hospital)
and salary cap is about 75 k i would say with no over time
you can't beat that!! OR pays better than ER at least in houston
we acutally get a 5k bump just like the icu nurses at my hospital

but i would highly suggest working for a state or federal hospital in the OR you can't beat the hours time off and benifits !! we have a trf retirment and other options but trf is standard

There is really no good answer to that, everyone is an individual but men seem to be drawn to the ER, ICU, OR or flight team more often than now. Good luck.

Re: best areas for male nuses....

No really good answer there since states and hospitals vary so much. If you are an active guy, check into states that are heavy in what you like to do. If you are seeking employment as a New Grad, you need to research hospitals that offer training for new RN's, either wherever you are or in other states. Specialty? -- you will need to decide that one, my man. However, I would say that ER and Critical Care (ICU, CCU, MICU, SICU, etc.) are the two biggest guy areas. Flights is as well, but new RN's are rarely, if ever, trained for that. Normally one needs at least 2 years experience. Good luck to you!

I think it depends on your temperament aka personality. Psych. is also a great area with a lot of room for advancement.

Salary wise.. I looked it up on the BLS website, the bay area is one of the highest paying.

I've always been under the impression Medsurg is the place to begin.
