death from ischemic bowel

How does somebody die suddenly (or not suddenly) from ischemic bowel?
We had a pt on our unit, confused and unable to express pain, so the abd pain went unoticed i suppose. The nurse went in, pt was normal, then became modeled and died within six hours.
The code team who responded initially seemed convinced that the pt had ischemic bowel, due to the pt's presentation i suppose.

does anybody know the patho behind this? and how a pt presents with sudden or unrecognized ischemic bowel? is it a metabolic imbalance, electrolytes, sepsis? We dont know the autopsy results, so we dont know if thats what happened, but regardless i think its a really good think to know about.
there is about five or six nurses i know that would really appreciate youre help!!! Thanks guys =)

Re: death from ischemic bowel

hi,

I would assume if she had an ischemic bowel she eventually ruptured and developed peritonitis and became septic, which led to septic shock, and death.
