Hi, All;
Need to know if any of you have had experience with pre-op/post-op bariatric surgical patients. All info appreciated.

Hi LoisJean, I am not sure what you are looking for. In the last year we have had three pts on our m/s unit with incisional hernias p open gastric bypass. all were over 4 months but less than a years post op.
It is my understanding that incisional hernia is a frequent complication of this surgery. On a prsonal note...my husband is scheduled to have this surgery june 11. His is scheduled to be done laparoscopically which supposedly has a quicker recovery period. He has had an extensive per-op work up, had to attend a four session series of nutrition classes, meet with a psychologist..all BEFORE the surgeon's office would approach insurance for approval. He also had to provide all his medical records pertaining to sleep apnea, GERD, and a detailed written explanation of all the diets and weight loss meds he has tried in the past. We have been told he will be in the hospital 4-6 days. NG the first 24-36 hours and go home on fl diet for the first six weeks. Does this help any? By the way, if you are so inclined, please say a prayer for us that all goes well. Thanks

You are so great! Thanks! I was beginning to wonder if anyone was going to reply. My husband is also scheduled for this procedure. He will be undergoing the Roux n Y procedure. He, too, has had the full gamut of tests which your husband has had including sleep clinic- (he has been put on C-PAP (at 17 psi! its a wonder his brains don't blow out of his ears)--anyway, the only requirement left is pre-op upper and lower GI. He's excited about the surgery--really ready...calls it the, "Brave Heart Procedure"...(if you didn't see the movie, get it and watch the last 30 minutes). We had been told about the possibility of hernia complication. Thanks for the input and yes, prayer surrounds you and him even as you read this! LoisJean
