While at the ANA confernce, I attended a wonderful session called Making a Difference: Sharing Success Stories in Nursing where nurses shared wonderful uplifting stories with the audience.

I thought we'd create an online forum for us all to share these types of stories with each other. So please feel free to share your success stories for everyone to read.

I hope you all enjoy this forum!

Making a Difference: Sharing Success Stories in Nursing
Description:
Stories can help nurses share their lived experiences in managing the demands of caring in today's health care environment. The pupose of this unique interactive session is to provide a forum for nurses to share their life stories and realize the many ways in which they make a difference for their patients, co-workers teams and institutions. Sharing your experiences and reflections on "lessons learned" will further support the renewal of caring skills which are at the heart of nursing... and, at greatest risk for being lost to short staffing and other health care demands.

Wonderful idea, Brian !

What with all the negatives and moaning and groaning (albeit so often justified), this does sound like a positive comeback... gives the much needed "boost" and encouragement... not only to us but all the newcomers into nursing as well as the students.

On Allnurses.com, as in real life, it is so easy to come by the horror stories all too common in nursing.

Thank you for taking the time to make a special place for nurses to tell how they have made a difference for the better. These stories are needed to refresh the soul of the nurse who has been practicing for years; to comfort the novice nurse who so desperately wants to make a difference; to fortify the determination of the student nurse; to give hope to the soul of the undecided citizen not sure if nursing is for him/her.

I am just in the process of applying to nursing school. I have gone back and forth w/ the idea for years now. Mostly I held back due to financial reasons. Until recently, I couldn't afford to stay home full time and afford child care on just my hubby's income. With the strain it will undoubtedtly put on this at-home-for-the-last-5-years mama(!), I was seriously thinking I was nuts for attempting it after reading some of the other threads on this site!!! I have a BS in bio and psych, so I shouldn't have too many pre-reqs...my ultimate goal is NP and I am taking spanish so that I can help underserved populations. I volunteer at my daughters school quite often, mostly working w/ the latino children (ESL students). I love it...anyway I ramble. Thanks again for the positive vibes I know its tough out there...but I think I can hack it.

I appreciate these success stories from nursing. I have been a nurse for 20 years and have had my share of ups & downs in this profession. Hearing stories like these from my brothers and sisters in nursing is refreshing and encouraging; reminding me that I made the right choice and I am proud to wear the RN acronym behind my name. A fabulous resource of inspirational, real-life stories from nurses and the patients they serve is "Reclaiming the Passion and Journaling to Reclaim the passion" by Kristin Baird, RN. I love this book because it reveals what nurses actually do and how they feel about their work. The stories are by nurses from very different backgrounds and are upbeat, heart-warming, and funny. I gave copies of this book and the accompanying journal to my niece who is also a nurse; she loved it. I understand there is a music cd available too, but I have not heard it. Apparently the music is composed by a hospice nurse for her patients...wow.
