Found this black and white photo gallery by Peter Chou today during my internet travels. Had to share with my colleagues. Nursing shines through in these pictures. Karen

Nurses of Singapore are the backbone of its healthcare system. During the SARS outbreak of 2003, the nurses stoodfast and did not abandon their posts. All the photos in this gallery were taken 4 months after the outbreak. Hence the presence of the anti-viral N95 masks in the photos. I am proud to serve with such courageous professionals. This is my humble tribute to all the nurses who suffered and died during the terrible 4 months of 2003. Rest in peace. You will not be forgotten.

I actually plan to travel to asia for work once I graduate too.. just for the experience..

I'm wondering if the nurse pay is decent enough to live there and have some change left to spare?
and also.. If i can't speak singaporean.. but can speak cantonese and english,
will I have a chance of getting hired?

Hi there... Jus wanted to share cuz i used to work in singapore... Well, fortunately, they are mainly English speaking..but the thing is, the elderlies sometimes doesnt speak english..but u will always have colleagues to intepret for u..Or..ud learn their language bit by bit and its quite interesting..they seldom speak cantonese but another language mainly spoken is Malay..then Hokkien..I think Cantonese is mainly spoken in Hongkong...To be honest, once u work there, u will wish that their infection control can be brought here in England.. No other place can handle SARS better than they did.. I was there, and I have friends, colleagues who lost their lives during the epidemic..doctors, co-nurses, radiographers, therapists....everyone was affected..The main reason y I moved here in the UK after being w/ them during the height of its spread..twas very depressing..

The pay, well, its less than a thousand pounds to start w/ in a govt hospital.... try the private hospitals wc u cld have mistaken for a hotel, insyd and out..they can offer a better pay and a lesser stressful environment..hope this helps..

I have visited Singapore this year. Very clean place and honest people. You will not be afraid of walking down the streets thinking somebody will rob you. My sis works there as a nurse, the salary is not as good considering the cost of living.

Singapore is actually one of the more expensive places to live in SE Asia, and the nursing salaries are nothing like the US.

To work in any of the countries over there, you need to be fluent in their language, as well as pass the nursing boards in their language. And then you have immigration issues to deal with. It is goign to be much harder than you think to work at one of the local hospitals in any of the countries there.
