That was a great story. Our patients are the reason we have a career. I also believe that it's so important to be positive when we are at work, for our co-workers, our patients and our patients families. As for our patients , we may do all the right things when it comes to medications and procedures, but sometimes just being there and giving them attention that they may not have received in a long time goes even further than any medication we could give them. A positive attitude and good communication will make all the difference in our work as a nurse. I can be having a very busy day and when a patient tells me thank you for helping them it makes my whole day feel worth while. When a patient appreciates our efforts in caring for them, it makes us feel great or at least it does me, and makes me realize even more why I love what I do.

Re: The Perfect Shift

I'm still in school, and the one thing that I am currently worried about is not being able to deal with the long shifts and the fact that every week it's different. I know that when i eventually graduate I will probably get all the night shifts which I'm kinda scared of because I currently work in a grocery store (to help pay for school) and I can't stand it... I wonder if its because I hate the job, I'm hoping that when I am working as a nurse on night shifts (as well as anyother crazy shift) I will be able to cope with it because it is something that I want to do!!!

I wouldn't worry about the long shifts...many times you are so busy that the hours pass without you realizing it. The good thing about 12s is that, I believe, you can pace yourself better, and then you get four days off. It'll take some getting used to. I currently work 3 12s as a HUC/CMT while I wait to get into the nursing program (I work nights), and it took me a few months to get into, but now I can't imagine anything else and I know that when I work as a nurse I will continue this shift.

As for having different things occur makes it all the more interesting, nothing is more boring than having the same thing happen every single day. What other career can you have such versatility?

Kris
