We ALL can be "a nurse like that".

All that's required is to see and listen with the heart... then when you get that little nudge or tug, STOP, and follow through.

We're not there to please our supervisors, or NMs, DONs...or the company , the hospital or whatever.... we're there to assist and advocate for our PATIENTS.

I like the old saying "stop and smell the roses". Many of us get so caught up in the "work", and all it entails, that we get often too busy to recognize the real needs of the patient.. which are often more than physical. I stay tuned in to their subtle, unspoken needs.. even make a point to seek them out.

I know there's a lot of pressure to get the "work" done, but that's "company thinking", and I just don't THINK like that. If I did, I'd be an administrator or something along those lines.

When I work with my patients, I see a human being, not a profiit opportunityfor the hospital/company, or someone to rush through to get on to the next one.

I think we all have the desire to be this way... that's why we went into nursing to begin with. Stop and smell the roses. The rose just might be your patient.

Netters....yesterday when I had my surgery, I had the best nurse and she really reminded me of what I think you would be like. She was so kind and upbeat and understanding and took time with me and apologized when she was busy and couldn't be with me....Just wonderful! I almost felt like YOU were there! LOL! In fact, every nurse I encountered yesterday was fabulous and they all want me to come work with them when I get done with school! LOL! (I think because I was a good patient!)

YOU ROCK NETTERS! and just the fact that I was comparing others to you shows how you make an impression on some of us here!
