Jennifer Veary - HIV Positive Nurse with a Heart for Vietnam

She was a nurse searching for love 14 years ago when she contracted HIV from a straight male. Amidst the devastating fallout from her life-threatening disease she made a discovery that changed the course of her life.

"I was devastated when I found out," she says. "I had taken care of people with AIDS in the intensive care unit who were really sick...I thought I had one year to live... I wondered if I could still work."

Veary was single at the time, involved in a heterosexual relationship with someone who had a blood transfusion before blood products were properly screened... It was an emotionally turbulent period for the young nurse. "I was in the depths of despair. I didn't know who to turn to or what to do," she says.
