Re: Anyone start their career late in Life?

Hi Todd,
It is never too late, with a masters in IT have you ever thought of going into nursing informatics? Well that is if you go into nursing first. I would have to state that I was older when I first went into nursing school...no regrets. I received my BSN at the age of 55, and will graduate this June with my MSN in Nursing Education. Late..never. This degree will be my ticket to assisting with the nursing educator decline by being actively involved with teaching students and will provide me with a way to stay connected with the world of nursing. I have loved every minute and will till...

Hi Todd--
If you really want to practice nursing, then just do it without comparing or negating yourself based on the opinions of other people.
The angels are with you!!

Re: Anyone start their career late in Life?

Iris 56, thanks for your message. I graduated from nursing school in 1969 with a BS in nursing. I worked as a school nurse teacher for 2 years and then got my master's in elementary education and worked as a teacher for 25 years. Approx. 4 years ago I took a refresher course in nursing and did quite well. Due to getting married and 3 surgeries, I was unable to go back into nursing at that time. Now an opportunity presents itself to work in a treatment center as a detox nurse. I am 60 yrs old and now in good health. Do you think it is too late for me? Do you think I need another refresher course first? Thanks.

Re: Anyone start their career late in Life?

I was 27 when I graduated as a Midwife, there were others in my class 10+ years older, who were so focused on their learning, and are now fantastic midwives. Maybe as their kids were grown up a bit, which is where I am now, it was all the easier to put everything into the study, but my three were all still wee! I spent many a midnight oil burnin time, after I had done all my mammy stuff, just studying. OMG..THAT was the year I started smoking! Figure that out!

Still, I'm glad that I did it when I did, it was hard, sometimes impossible at the time, but the feeling of achievement at the end, especially when my kiddos all made me cards and had a dinner in my honour on my last day as a student...WOW! unforgettable! And now I'm reaping the rewards..ie..no childcare issues whichever shift I work!
Mature students...Go for it!

Re: Anyone start their career late in Life?

I would love to hear from some of the folks who started their nursing career later in life, specifically what it is like to search for a job, actually work as a first year nurse etc, not so much what its like to be an older student but an actual older NEW nurse. I estimate I will be 50 when i finish school. Is there anyone who can their story? Thanks!!!!!!
