Re: Anyone start their career late in Life?

"I am 48 years old and i have just passed my Nclex-RN exam. I started this Arduous ...."
I am a 45 y/o who came from electrical engineering. Engineering was so easy compared to nursing. I graduated 2 years ago and have been doing CCU and ICU among float shifts. Now I am interviewing hospitals for me to go to work with them.
However, something caught my attention from delee99: "I am the Care Manager of the Assistitad living side" don't you need some nursing experience before you dip your toes on a managerial position? (I'm assuming you meant "assisted living") I had 17 people working under me in the engineering position but I have to say nurse management is a different animal all together...no troubles?

hotomalis.... Assisted living is very different than LTC, they live independently, with extra services. Laundry, Housekeeping, assistance with minor medical needs, like setting Doc appointments, and setting up meds for a week at a time etc. I have known that I was going to be Working here as an RN for over a year. I also assist the Care Manager of the LTC. so i don't believe it will be any trouble.
I have also interviewed as for a position as a Nurse Case Manager for a small hospital in the next town. it is with Hospice and Home care.
She just called and offered me the position. (part time) She said i had gotten an unexpected referance from the Medical director who had Delivered my Granddaugher, the same day i took my NClex. (that is another long story) the Jest of his remarks were. "If she could take and pass the NCLEX when her only Daughter was in labor with her 1st baby then Make back in time and help with the delivery she must work well under pressure."
I thing in the case of Nursing Age is a benifit.

Wow~ I am glad you asked that question! I am in the same boat. I am a 36yr old pre-nursing student. My previous career was in Insurance and in my oppinion that is just NOT the place for me right now.
I am excited about my new career choice. Personally, I think my age and experience is a plus for me because I am VERY focused. Well, I wish you luck. Thanks again for asking that question~

Look at me - RN at 42, Bachelors degree at 46, Masters degree at 52 - hard work yes but I have enjoyed it immensely and wouldn't change a thing. Am now Clinical Educator in a 40 bed NICU and looking at moving into nursing education soon (55 and my feet and back ain't getting any younger).
The point is that you are never too old - go for it!

HI All,
Was 48 years old when i answered a newspaper AD to attend an orientation for PN/ASN Courses offered here. I am glad i did; graduated in PN with honors and several awards last April 2007 - hoping to finish my ASN course in November - it is hard but the personal gratification of being able to reinvent my life is great and the experience of making a difference in other people's lives immensely fulfilling. So to all of us here, cheers and more power!
